Joseph Anderson

January 12, 1837 ~ February 23, 1935

Joseph Anderson, Orangeville’s oldest citizen, died in Lord Dufferin Hospital on Saturday, February 23, 1935, in his 99th year. Mr. Anderson was taken to hospital on Wednesday morning of last week, suffering from the flu. Pneumonia developed and the end came quickly and without suffering.

The late Mr. Anderson, who celebrated his 98th birthday on January 12th last, was born at Six Mile Cross, County Tyrone, Ireland. He left Ireland for Canada in 1842 with his father, mother, brother and sister. Ireland was in the throes of a severe famine at the time and the long voyage to the unknown new world was undertaken to escape the privations that the shortage of crops and food had visited on the Irish people. When the long and perilous trip across the Atlantic was nearing completion and the vessel was approaching Quebec, Mr. Anderson’s parents and sister were stricken with the dreaded cholera plague, which was raging at the time. All three died leaving the two small boys alone in the world.

Joseph Anderson was adopted by an uncle who lived in Mono township and his brother was placed in the charge of a Roman Catholic priest in the United States. Brought up in different countries, the brothers did not meet again until 43 years later, when they met in Minnesota. We understand that the brother held a position in the employ of the United States Government.

The subject of our sketch spent the greater part of his lifetime on the 7th line, Mono, where he was a successful farmer. In 1902 he retired from the farm and came to Orangeville to live. His wife, who was Miss Annie Anderson before marriage, died in 1911.

He is survived by three sons and one daughter, Benjamin Anderson, Hockley, Robert and Samuel, living in Toronto, and Mrs. Wesley Bell, of Beeton. The late Mr. Anderson was for many years a staunch member of Relessey Methodist Church and upon coming to Orangeville joined First Avenue Methodist, now United Church. He was a man of deep religious convictions and unquestioning faith. He was a Conservative in politics and was identified with the Orange Order in earlier years.

The funeral, which was attended by a large number of citizens and former Mono friends and neighbors, was held form his late residence on Second Ave. to the Forest Lawn Cemetery on Monday afternoon. Public service was held by his pastor, Rev. R. Pogue, in First Avenue Church. The remains were born to their last resting place by Messrs. William J. Stinson, William J. Quigley, William K. Laverty, R. J. Anderson, Hilliard Anderson and George H. Mills. The flower-bearers were Borden Penny, Trueman Bell and Gregg Howard.

Among the flora tributes were: Spray, Official Board First Avenue United Church; sprays, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Anderson, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Glassford, Caledon, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Bell, Beeton, and Mr. and Mrs. Borden Penny, Orangeville; basket, the Misses Hulse.

Among the friends present were Mrs. H. W. Modeland and son, Henry, of Barrie; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Anderson, Mr. R. J. Anderson and Mr. George Snell, Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Anderson, Hockley; Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Bell and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Bell, Beeton. Orangeville Banner, Feb. 28, 1935.

Anna Anderson

August 12, 1836 ~ February 28, 1911

Anna Anderson, beloved wife of Mr. Joseph Anderson, passed away at the family home on Second Avenue, on Tuesday, [February 28, 1911] at the advanced age of 75 years. Mrs. Anderson was taken ill with pneumonia shortly after Christmas and this was followed by a general breaking down of the system. Deceased lady was a native of Armagh, Ireland, but came to Canada with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson, when only six years of age. The family settled on the 6th Line of Mono. The subject of this notice was married to Joseph Anderson on November 24, 1859, the young couple afterwards taking up their home on the 6th Line, Mono, where they resided until five years ago, when they retired from the farm, taking up their residence in Orange-ville. Mr. Anderson and a family of three sons and four daughters survive. The latter are Ben and S. J. Anderson, Relessey; R. J. Anderson, Alliston; Mrs. A. C. Wilson, Orangeville; Mrs. W. D. Bell, Beeton, and Misses Mary and Lizzie at home. The late Mrs. Anderson was a sincere, Christian woman, a devoted wife and mother and a kindly, sympathetic neighbour. Her demise will be greatly regretted by her friends here and in her old neighbourhood, who extend their sincere sympathy to Mr. Anderson and family in their trying bereavement. The funeral was held to the Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Harper, of Orangeville, and Rev. Charles Langford, of Alton, conducted the services at the house and grave. Orangeville Banner, Mar. 2, 1911.
