Ralph Lester Evans was born to Matthew and Mary Evans on July 28, 1893 in Rock Valley, Iowa. He had two brothers, Earle and Raye, and one sister, Florence. In 1906 Ralph’s father brought his family to the Leslieville district to homestead. Ralph worked with his father and continued to attend school, graduating from Bentley in 1909.

In 1911 Ralph and his two brothers bought their father’s steam threshing machine and went into business doing custom threshing around Bentley, Eckville, and Leslieville.

After serving in the First World War, Ralph married Ruth Meinzinger in Detroit, Michigan on March 26, 1919 and he and Ruth moved back to Alberta in August of that year. Here they began farming their own land near Withrow, and helped Ralph’s brothers with a threshing operation. Ralph and Ruth were blessed with four children born to them on this farm: Marie, now Mrs. Lawrence Biswanger; Robert; Calvin; and Carole, now Mrs. Zoley Garnick.

During the depression years Ralph and Ruth continued to farm their land near Withrow. In the winters Ralph ran several sawmills and a trucking business. These endeavors made Ralph well-known throughout the country in the lumber and trucking businesses.

In 1944 Ralph and Ruth sold their farm and moved to Calgary. In 1947 Ralph moved again, this time to the United States to pursue the sawmill business. For the next three years he, Ruth, Calvin and Carole lived in Portland, Oregon and in Dayton, Washington. Finally, in 1950 Ralph returned with his family to Calgary where he continued with his trucking company.

In 1968 Ralph and Ruth retired and moved back to the Withrow area to live with his daughter Marie and her husband Lawrence on their farm.

Ralph's wife, Ruth passed away in 1975. Shortly afterward Ralph, at the age of 82, went into business with his sons Bob and Calvin in a land clearing and oilfield constuction company near Breton. Ralph participated actively in this company right up to the day of his hospitilization in November, 1984, at the age of 91.

Ralph was predeceased by his two brothers, Earle and Raye; his wife Ruth; and his great grandson, Scott Houston. He is survived by two sons, Bob of Breton and Cal of London, England; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Biswanger of Eckville and Mrs. Carole Garnick of Rimbey; his sister Florence; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
