Mary Eliza Joness  (1864 ~ 1955)

 

4.1.4.1. First child of John M. Joness and Annie E. McFadden, Mary Eliza “Minnie” Joness, was born March 4, 1864, in Darlington Twp., Durham Co., Ontario.

  She married John Joblin, son of George Joblin and Jane Saunders, July 12, 1911, in Bowmanville, Ontario.

  Mary E. Joness Joblin died July 15, 1955, aged 92 years in Gormley, Whitchurch Twp., York Co., Ontario, and John Joblin died February 15, 1943, aged 94 years in Scugog Is., Ontario Co., Ontario.

Minnie E. Joness Joblin

March 4, 1864 ~ July 15, 1955

Mrs. John Joblin passed away suddenly on Friday, July 15, 1955, at Maple Glen Rest Home, Gormley, Ont.  She was in her 92nd year.

  The deceased was born near Bowmanville, the daughter of Mr. J. M. and Mrs. Joness and spent the early part of her life in the vicinity of that town, where she was a much beloved Sunday School teacher in the Church St. Methodist Church, later Trinity United Church.  For some years she held the position of District Organizer of the Woman’s Missionary Society.

  In 1911 she was married to Mr. John Joblin of Red Deer Indian Industrial School where she found ample scope for her missionary zeal.

  In 1918 Mr. Joblin was appointed to the Scugog Pastoral Charge. Later they bought the store on the Island and for seventeen years were faithful member of Maple Grove Church at the Foot of the Island.

  Mrs. Joblin is survived by two sisters, Mrs. H. C. Brittain of Calgary, Alberta and Miss A. B. Joness of Moose Jaw, Sask.; by a brother Mr. Fred Joness of Stettler, Alberta and by Rev. F. G. Joblin a step-son of Port Perry.

  The funeral service was held from the McDermott Funeral Home, Port Perry and was conducted by the Rev. Dr. B. D. Armstrong, assisted by Rev. Prof. Kingsley Joblin of Toronto. Dr. Armstrong gave a most comforting message from the appropriate text “She hath done what she could”. 

  Interment was in the family plot in Bowmanville Cemetery.

 The pall-bearers were Messrs. C. L. Fralick and Russell Hood of Scugog; Russell Carter, Oliver Reader and Stanley Ploughman of Port Perry and Morris Joness of Bowmanville, a nephew of the deceased. Port Perry Star, Aug. 11, 1955.

John Joblin

January 1, 1850 ~ February 15, 1943

In failing health for some months the death occurred on Scugog Island, Monday, February 15, 1943, of John Joblin, beloved husband of Minnie E. Joness. He was in his 94th year.

  The late Mr. Joblin was born in the Isle of Wight and came to Canada in 1862 and settled in Bowmanville, where he was employed for many years in the Dominion Piano factory.  He was an active church worker in Bowmanville and was lay reader and superintendent of the Sunday School in what is now known as Trinity United Church. He was also the leader of the choir of the church for many years.

  Mr. Joblin later moved to Oshawa where he was employed for a time by the Williams Piano Company. He later followed his trade in Toronto. After moving to Red Deer, Alberta, he became assistant superintendent of the Red Deer Indian Institute. Returning to Ontario in 1918 he took charge of the Scugog preaching circuit for two years and for another 17 years operated a store on the island. Following his retirement he lived with his son, Rev. Fred G. Joblin, at the parsonage on Scugog Island.

  In 1875 he was married to Selina Miller, also of the Isle of Wight, who predeceased him in 1908. In 1911 he was married to Miss Minnie E. Joness of Bowmanville, who survives him. He is also survived by one son, Rev. Fred G. Joblin of Scugog Island and five grandchildren.

Mr. Joblin rested at the chapel of A. L. McDermott, in Port Perry, for a short service on Wednesday, February 17, at 11 a.m., which was conducted by Rev. J. V. McNeely, of King Street United Church, Oshawa, assisted by the Rev. W. C. Smith, Port Perry, and his grandson, Rev. Fred H. Joblin, of Bowmanville. Service was at the home of his grandson, in Bowmanville, at 2 p.m., followed by interment in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto. Bowmanville Statesman, Feb. 18, 1943.
