----- OBITUARY -----

M. H. ELFORD

PIONEER OF VALLEY, DEAD

Milton H. Elford, a resident of the Pecos valley for nearly 10 years, died last night at St. Mary’s hospital at 8 o’clock of pneumonia, following a very brief illness.

Milton Elford, well-known all over the Pecos valley arrived in Hagerman nearly 40 years and engaged in the mercantile business there. Later he moved to Dexter where he spent more than 36 years.

Mr. Elford laid out the town of Dexter, served as its first postmaster and was mayor of the town for many years. He was a most admirable and spent lavishly of his time and money for the benefit of his community and town.

Mr. Elford was a pioneer in the development of a market for Pecos valley alfalfa hay and was in many ways a most unusual character. He was 60 years of age at the time of his death.

During his early residence in the Pecos valley Mr. Elford was visited here by his mother, father and brother, who went from here to Galveston with Mr. Elford. The four were caught in the Galveston flood, the mother, father and brother being drowned and Mr. Elford spending 24 hours on top of a house.

Exposure at this time was the cause of his physical condition.

The body is being held at the Dilley Funeral Home awaiting word from a brother in Pontiac, Michigan. Roswell Daily Record, Feb. 27, 1930.
