Charles Rogers

October 15, 1843 ~ March 29, 1934

There was published in this paper some weeks ago a notice of the passing of a former resident of Darlington township in the person of Charles Rogers who died in San Francisco, California, at the advanced age of 90 years, 6 months. Mr. Rogers was born near Enniskillen, on October 15, 1843, and was the eldest son of the late William Hambly Rogers. He lived the greater part of his life near his birthplace. In 1868 he was united in marriage with Eliza Ann Elford, only daughter of the late William Elford of Hampton. Mr. Rogers also lived for a time in Bowmanville and for some years lived northwest of Solina on farm now occupied by Mr. Walter Vice. In 1911 the family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Here Mrs. Rogers passed away in 1918, shortly after the anniversary of their golden wedding. Mr. Rogers was a life long member of the Methodist Church and later rejoiced to see the establishment of the Unite Church. For the past six years he resided with his children in California, where he enjoyed good health of mind and body up until a short time before his death. Being of a pioneer spirit, he welcomed opportunities to visit new lands, but always took a keen interest in the affairs of his native land, and especially of the communities where he had formerly lived.

The funeral services were held in San Francisco on Saturday, March 31, followed by cremation. He leaves to mourn his loss four daughters and two sons: Mrs. J. A. Riley, Chicago, Mrs. George Holmes, Walhalla, N.D., Mrs. Gilbert Van Nest, San Francisco, Miss Ella G. Rogers, San Francisco, Herbert of Calgary, and Robert of San Francisco.  One daughter, Mrs. W. M. Joness, passed away in 1932 at Berkeley, California. Besides his children he is survived by two brothers and one sister, Rev. David Rogers, St. Thomas, Mr. Frank Rogers, Whitby, and Mrs. R. G. Overland, Erin. Bowmanville Statesman, May 31, 1934.
