Eliza Ann Souch  (1845 ~ 1929)

 

4.4.1. First child of Dorothy Elford and William Souch, Eliza Ann Souch, was born March 30, 1845, in Providence, Darlington Twp., Durham Co., Ontario.  

  She married John Gilbert, son of William Gilbert and Jane Hooper, May 1, 1863, in Providence, Ontario and had eight children: 

 

 

  Eliza A. Souch Gilbert died July 24, 1929, aged 84 years in Napanee, Ontario and John Gilbert died March 2, 1926, aged 87 years in Bowmanville, Ontario and are interred at Hampton Union Cemetery.

Eliza A. Souch Gilbert

March 30, 1845 ~ July 24, 1929

A highly respected resident of Napanee, formerly of Enniskillen and Bowmanville, in the person of Mrs. Eliza Gilbert, widow of the late John Gilbert, passed away at her son-in-law’s, W. J. Trenouth, Napanee, Ont., on Wednesday, July 24, 1929, in her 85th year.  She was the eldest daughter of the late William and Dorothy Souch. She was a life-long Methodist; also possessed a lovable and kindly disposition; always willing to help others in time of need.

  The burial took place from her brother’s, C. W. Souch, Hampton, to Hampton Cemetery, where she was laid beside her husband and five children who predeceased her some years ago. The floral offerings were beautiful. The pall-bearers were four nephews: Albert Allin, John E. Allin, Wesley R. Allin and S. C. Allin of Bowmanville. The service was conducted by Rev. J. R. Bick, Hampton circuit.

  She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. W. J. Trenouth, Napanee; Mr. Arthur Gilbert, Lumsden, Sask.; also 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Mr. S. E. Souch, Stettler, Alta., Mrs. Charles Pearn, New Westminster, B.C., J. J. Souch, Langdon, North Dakota, Mrs. Laura Pye, Enniskillen, Miss Eva Souch, Bowmanville, and C. W. Souch, Hampton. John Gilbert

April 22, 1843 ~ March 2, 1926

After an illness of some months John Gilbert passed to his reward on Tuesday, March 2, 1926, aged 83 years. He was born near Salem in the township of Darlington, and was the eldest son of the late William and Jane Gilbert, who resided on the farm now occupied by his grandson, Russell R. Gilbert. He married Eliza Ann Souch, the eldest daughter of the late William and Dorothy Souch on the 7 Con. of the township of Darlington.

  Deceased was a farmer for many years after marriage, near the village of Enniskillen where he attended the M. E. Church and was Superintendent of Sabbath School up to his removal to Bowmanville, where he and his son Arthur carried on the grain and coal business at the west end.

  Deceased was a good neighbour, kind and affectionate father of seven children of whom five predeceased him some years ago.  He is survived by his widow, one son, Arthur of Lumsden, Sask., and one daughter, wife of W. J. Trenouth, Principal of Napanee Public School. Also one brother, James Gilbert, Port Perry, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Bagley, San Francisco, Calif.

Deceased was buried from his late home, Base Line, near Bowmanville, to Hampton Cemetery, the service being conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. U. Robins.

  The pall-bearers were four cousins—Albert, John, Wesley and Charles Allin and A. E. Bellman and W. L. Barton.

   Floral offerings included: Wreath from Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Trenouth, Napanee; sprays, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. and Miss Eva Souch, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Allin, Mrs. J. Pye and Howard, Enniskillen, Miss Sheridan, Napanee, Mr. and Mrs. A. Martin.

  Mrs. Gilbert had the sincere sympathy of her neighbours and friends. Bowmanville Statesman, Mar. 11, 1926.
