----- OBITUARIES -----

Samuel E. Souch

June 28, 1850 ~ July 14, 1932

The death of Mr. S. E. Souch on Thursday, July 14, 1932, was keenly regretted by all citizens of Stettler and community, where he had been a resident for the past twenty-six years. Although he had reached the ripe age of 82 years, he had been in good health up to a few weeks ago, and for the past three weeks had been receiving attention at the Municipal Hospital. Advancing years had taken their toll, however, and heart weakness was the immediate cause of his death.

The late Mr. Souch was born on a farm near Enniskillen, Ontario, in July, 1850, his parents being William and Dorothy Elford Souch, who were pioneer settlers of that province. On September 28, 1874, he was married to Harriet Permilla Bradley, who survives him, and on September 28, 1924, the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Souch had been celebrated in town.

Mr. Souch farmed the old Bradley homestead, near Enfield, Ontario, for 29 years, and then retired to the town of Bowmanville to reside. In 1903, however, he followed his sons to Alberta, and settled in Stettler in 1906, where he was an esteemed resident for the past twenty-six years.

Besides his wife, he leaves a farmily of three sons and one daughter, Bertram F. of Medicine Hat; Mark H. and Gordon of Edmonton; and Dorothy (Mrs. E. Sarvis) of Sumac, Washington. Also one brother, C. W. Souch of Hampton, Ontario, and three sisters, Mrs. C. Pearn of New Westminster, B.C., Mrs. Laura Pye and Miss Eva Souch of Enniskillen, Ontario. Also fourteen grandchildren, six boys and eight girls.

The funeral services were held in the United Church on Sunday, July 17th, at 2:30 p.m., and interment took place at Lakeview Cemetery. The officiating ministers were Rev. A. D. Richards and Rev. J. F. Woodsworth, former pastors of Stettler Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member of the quarterly board for many years. The funeral was one of the largest held from the church an the beautiful flowers testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held by the citizens of the town.

The officiating ministers paid many affecting tributes to the deceased and he departed this life full of years and honours. For many years he had taken an active part in church work and had been a member of church boards for sixty years, formerly of the Methodist Church in Bowmanville and Stettler, and later of the United Church. His was the illustration of the well-spent life.

Friends from a distance attending the funeral included Drs. E. W. and Norman Allin of Edmonton; Samuel Elford, Medicine Hat; Inspector and Mrs. McLean of Red Deer; Mrs. James Cole and Miss Mina Cole, Red Deer; Rev. A. D. and Mrs. Richards, Rev. J. F. Woodsworth, and Mrs. H. Tanner, of Edmonton, Alta.—Stettler Independent. Bowmanville Statesman, July 28, 1932.

In 1906 they followed their children west and settled in Stettler, Alberta, where they were pioneers in the settling of that district and in building the first Methodist church there.

In 1932 Mr. Souch passed away and since then Mrs. Souch has lived with her children in Edmonton, Medicine Hat and Sumas, Wash.

She leaves to mourn her loss a family of four, all living: Bertram F. of Medicine Hat, Alta.; Mark H. and Gordon P. of Edmonton, and Dorothy (Mrs. E. S. Sarvis) of Sumas, Wash.
