John Adams  (1880 ~ 1945)

 

4.4.3. Third child of Robert Adams and Susan Pinch, John Adams, was born May 21, 1880, in Osprey Twp., Grey Co., Ontario.

  He married (1) Agnes Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton, c. 1907, and she died July 18, 1908, aged 24 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  He married (2) Sophie Kurtenbach, daughter of Johann Kurtenbach and Elisabeth Wermers, January 24, 1912, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and had ten children:

 

 

  John Adams died April 26, 1945, aged 64 years, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and Sophie Kurtenbach Adams died May 7, 1975, aged 84 years in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and are interred at Humboldt Cemetery.

John Adams

The death occurred on Thursday, April 26, 1945 of John Adams, a pioneer of Humboldt, Saskatchewan at the age of 64 years and 11 months, after an illness of over two years.

  The late Mr. Adams was born in Collingwood, Ontario in 1880 and as a young man worked as a mate on passenger steamships in the east. In 1904 he came to Humboldt as an agent for the Luseland Company, and later went into the real estate business forming the John Adams Realty Company. He afterwards served on the town police force and in 1941 he went to Alameda where he managed a hotel until he was forced to retire owing to ill health and returned to Humboldt in 1943.

 In 1912 he married Sophia Kurtenbach, who survives him. He also leaves four daughters, Agnes (Mrs. Stuart Priest), Marian, Vivian, and Shirley, all at home, and five sons, Archie in Saskatoon, F.O. Walter of the R.C.A.F. overseas; Pte. Earl in Hamilton, Harold in Humboldt, and John also in Humboldt. His son-in-law, Pte. Stuart Priest, is overseas. He also leaves one sister, Mary Adams, and three brothers, James, George, and Robert, all at Collingwood, Ontario

  Funeral service were held at Westminster United Church on Saturday, April 28 with Rev. K. S. Leaker officiating.

  Pallbearers wre S. M. Sutherland, B. J. Jansen, Geo. Douglas, W. B. Felton, J. E. Cameron and A. J. Kruse. Interment was made in the Humboldt Cemetery. E.I. Scharf had charge of arrangements. Humboldt Journal, May 3, 1945.

 

Agnes Hamilton Adams

August 21, 1883 ~ July 18, 1908

The remains of the late Agnes Adams, who died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Addison, 461 William Avenue, on Saturday, July 18, 1908. were sent last night to Humboldt, Sask., where the funeral will take place. Winnipeg Morning Free Press, July 20, 1908.

 

Sophie Kurtenbach Adams

May 4, 1891 ~ May 7, 1975

The death of Mrs. Sophie Adams, formerly of Humboldt, Sask., occurred [May 7, 1975]  in Saskatoon at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Priest. She was 84 years of age.

  Surviving are five sons and four daughters: John of London, England; Archibald of Victoria, B.C., Walter of Edmonton, Alta., Mrs. S. J. Priest (Agnes), Saskatoon; Harold of Saskatoon; Earl of Winnipeg, Man., Mrs. C. D. Ritchie (Marian), Saskatoon; Mrs. F. R. Phillips (Vivian), Saskatoon; and Mrs. S. M. Checkley (Shirley), Edmonton, Alta. There are 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

  Also surviving are five brothers: Ferdinand Kurtenbach and Frederick Kurtenbach, both of Cudworth, Sask., Charles Kurtenbach of Prince Albert, Sask., Joseph Kurtenbach of Saskatoon and John Kurtenbach of Souris, Man.

  Mrs. Adams was predeceased by her husband, John in 1945, and a son Frank in 1926

  A resident of Saskatoon for the last 20 years Mrs. Adams (nee Sophie Kurtenbach) was born in Parkston, S.D., U.S.A. in 1891 and came to Canada with her family in 1906 to the family farm at Cudworth, Sask. She was married to John Adams, a pioneer of the Humboldt district and formerly of Collingwood, Ontario, in 1912 and resided in Humboldt for 42 years before moving to Saskatoon. 

  The funeral service was held Saturday, May 10 from the Chapel of Scharf’s Funeral Home in Humboldt, conducted by the Rev. I. Fraser. The family gratefully decline floral tributes, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

  Interment was made in the family plot in the Humboldt Cemetery. Humbodt Journal, May 15, 1975.
