Shirley Joan Adams  (1937 ~ 2017)

 

4.4.3.10. Tenth child of John Adams and Sophie Kurtenbach, Shirley Joan Adams, was born January 23, 1937, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. 

  She married Stanley Meno Checkley, son of William Checkley and Maud Viola Crawford, July 3, 1965, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and had two children:

  • (4.4.3.10.2)  Sylvia Lee  (1969 ~ )

 

  Shirley J. Adams Checkley died August 20, 2017, aged 80 years, in Sherwood Park, Alberta, and Stanley M. Checkley died August 11, 2007, aged 75 years in Edmonton, Alberta.

Shirley J. Adams Checkley

January 23, 1937 ~ August 20, 2017

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Shirley Joan Checkley on August 20, 2017 at the age of 80 years. Shirley is lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Roy Treptau of Edmonton, AB; daughter, Sylvia Checkley and granddaughter, Morgan Mills, of Foothills, AB; brother, Harold Adams of Saskatoon, SK; sister, Vivian Phillips of Saskatoon, SK; sister-in-law, Charmaine Adams of Rothesay, NB; brother-in-law, Charles Ritchie of Leduc, AB; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Shirley was predeceased by her dear husband, Stan Checkley, in 2007; parents, Sophie and John Adams (née Kurtenbach); brothers, John, Archie, Walter, Frank, and Earl Adams; sisters, Agnes Priest and Marian Ritchie; brothers-in-law, Stuart Priest and Roy Phillips; sisters-in-law, Agnes, Dorian, Theresa, Charlotte, and Lucy Adams. Shirley was born January 23, 1937 and raised in Humboldt, SK, the youngest child in a large, energetic family. She attended nursing school in Saskatoon, worked as a nurse and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BSc (Nursing). She married Stan in 1965 and they lived in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Sherwood Park. Shirley enjoyed family, camping, gardening, crafts, antiques, theatre and knitting/crochet. She will be sadly missed, always remembered. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Chafe, Dr. Basi and all the kind staff at the Cross Cancer Institute for their care of Shirley. In keeping with Shirley's wishes, cremation will be followed by a small private service for immediate family. Interment will occur at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Stanley M. Checkley

August 12, 1931 ~ August 11, 2007

It is with great sadness that the family of Stanley Meno Checkley, beloved husband, father and poppa, announces his peaceful passing in the early hours of August 11, 2007.

 Stan is lovingly remembered by his dear wife of 42 years, Shirley (nee Adams, originally from Humboldt, Sask.), his daughters, Sharon (Roy Treptau) and Sylvia, along with his cherised granddaughter, Morgan. Stan is also survived by his sister, Violet Mason (Moose Jaw), and his brother, Ross (Betty) Checkley (Fox Valley), as well as many extended family members. Stan was predeceased by his father, William; mother, Maud Viola; stepfather, Joe Lafferty; brothers, Thomas, Irvin, Russell, William, Kenneth; sisters, Lilas and Alieta; as well as many other dear family members. 

  Stan was born on the family farm near Kelstern, Sask., the second youngest of ten children. He grew up in Kelstern/Chaplin area. He graduated from Moose Jaw Normal School in 1952 and then thoroughly enjoyed teaching in rural Saskatchewan, including his role as Principal in Climax, Sask. Stan always encourgaged students “to be the best that they could be.” Stan later completed his B.A. and B.Ed at the U. of S. in 1962, followed by a M.Ed at the U. of S. in 1969. He worked as a Counsellor and Head of Counselling Department at NAIT and then as a Rehabilitation Program Consultant for the Government of Alberta. Stan retired in 1990.

  The family wishes to thank Dr. McAlister and the staff of 5D2 at the U. of A. Hospital and Dr. Barton and the staff of the Norwood Palliative Care Unit.

  Cremation has already taken place. A Memorial Service to celebrate Stan’s life will be held on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at South Side Memorial Chapel, 8310-104 Street, Edmonton, Alta.  Those wishing may make a memorial donation in Stan’s name to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenur, Edmonton, Alta., T6G 1Z2.
