I. Ray Watson

January 28, 1884 ~ March 31, 1913

Monday morning at about nine o’clock the sad news came from Malta, Mont., by wire of the death of Ray Watson. The message to Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Souch, parents of Mrs. Watson, came as a terrible shock, the family having but a day or two ago heard all was well with the Watson’s in their Montana home. A second message which came about an hour later stated that Ray Watson had met his death by being smothered with gas, but gave no further details, except that Mrs. Watson was prostrated by the sorrow that had in such a sad way fallen on her. The last message came from a sister of the deceased, Miss Pearl Watson, who along with her brother and his wife numbered among the Langdon colony that left here some three years ago to homestead in Montana. The Watson farm is located at a distance of some twenty-five miles from the railroad, Malta, being the nearest point and the surmise is that the sad affair happened some time on Monday. It is known that the deceased had this spring moved his house to a new location and that he was engaged when the last letter came from them in digging a new well, which lends to the idea that he might have become overcome with gas while at work in the well digging. Mrs. Souch and daughter, Miss Eva, accompanied by Mrs. Jas. McLauchlin took the train on Tuesday to Malta. It is not know what arrangements will be made for the funeral, whether the body will be shipped to Langdon for interment or buried there. The people of Langdon generally felt as though a pall of gloom had be cast over the community when they learned of the sad happening. Langdon Courier Democrat, Apr. 3, 1913.
