Eva S. Souch
April 21, 1861 ~ March 11, 1949
Death has called one of our oldest, and most respected citizens in the person of Eva Selena Souch. Born near Enniskillen, 87 years ago, she was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy Souch.
In her early years she attended Mount Vernon Church, and those who knew her there, well remember her being organist for over thirty years. She also presided at the organ at Enniskillen Church for a period of time. Miss Souch lived in Bowmanville for many years; and was a member of Trinity United Church. Later she moved to Enniskillen to live with her sister, Mrs. John Pye, and latterly she and her nephew, Howard Pye, have lived in the Pye home for over fifteen years together.
The deceased was a staunch Christian character, a great soul with courage and conviction that her whole life endeavor could be best expended among her own people and friends. She was modest and unassuming and did her duty as she saw it. She had a great memory, and it was always a great pleasure for her to converse on many topics, she was a great reader until her sight began to fail her the past three years.
She was a tither all her life, no one knows, only the immediate family, how much was given to charity.
Miss Souch was a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society, Service Club of Enniskillen, and the United Church. Perhaps her greatest service was in her church work, she rarely ever missed, unless sickness prevailed. Her friendly manner to children, and to all associated with her will realize that her Christian example will be long remembered.
The funeral was held on March 14 from Enniskillen United Church. Rev. Rowe Seymour was in charge of the service. Mrs. Seymour presided at the organ and played favourite hymns of the deceased. The choir was in attendance.
The beautiful flowers from organizations, friends, and relatives testified to the respect with which Miss Souch was held.
One brother and two sisters still survive her, Laura (Mrs. John Pye), Toronto; Elizabeth (Mrs. Charlie Pearn), Cultus Lake, B.C.; and Cephas of Hampton.
The pallbearers were: Russell Ormiston, Russell Gilbert, Howard Stevens, Harvey McGill, Mervin Hobbs, Edgar Wright, all from Enniskillen.
Friends and relatives from a distance were from Toronto, Orono and Bowmanville.
Interment took place in the family plot at Hampton Cemetery.
Aunt Eva will be greatly missed especially by her nieces and nephews with whom she has shared many happy hours.
Loving and kind in all her ways
Upright and just to the end of her days.
Sincere and kind in heart and mind.
What a beautiful memory she left behind. Bowmanville Statesman, Mar. 24, 1949.
