Herbert Rolph Tilley (1865 ~ 1928)
4.5.4.2. Second child of Selina A. Vanstone and William E. Tilley, Herbert Rolph Tilley, was born July 6, 1865, in Tyrone, Darlington Twp., Durham Co., Ontario.
He married Lola Nancy May Ronan, daughter of Hugh Byron Ronan and Nancy Craig, June 29, 1904, in Toronto, York Co., Ontario.
Herbert R. Tilley died February 6, 1928, aged 59 years, and Lola N. Ronan Tilley died August 14, 1940, aged 78 years in Toronto, Ontario and are interred at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Yesterday afternoon in the Bloor Street Presbyterian Church the marriage of Miss Lola May Ronan and Mr. Herbert Rolph Tilley was solemnized. The officiating clergyman was Rev. W. G. Wallace, D.D., assisted by Rev. S. Cleaver, D.D. Mr. T. Arthur Blakeley presided at the organ. During the entrance of the bride the bridal hymn from Lohengrin was sung by Mrs. R. J. Dilworth, Mrs. J. Willson Lawrence, and Mrs. G. Tower Fergusson, and after the ceremony Mrs. Dilworth sang, “Oh Fair, Oh Sweet, and Holy.”
The best man was Mr. George A. Baker, and the bride was attended by Miss Margaret Hillock, while Miss Dorothy Tilley, a niece of the groom, and Master Willie McKendry acted as flower girl, and page respectively. The ushers were Mr. Charles A. Dent, Mr. J. Lesslie Fergusson, Dr. McLennan, and Mr. Norman D. Perry.
The bride was given away by Mr. G. Tower Fergusson, her brother-in-law, at whose residence, No. 70 Madison Avenue, a reception was afterwards held. Besides the immediate relatives of both parties, some of the guests were, Hon. George A. and Mrs. Cox, Mr. J. W. Flavelle, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Fudger, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Blaikie, Lieut. Colonel and Mrs. McDonald, Dr. McGillivray, Dr. Morley Wickett, Mr. and Mrs. William Scott, Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Rice, Dr. and Mrs. Horace Eaton. Herbert R. Tilley
July 6, 1865 ~ February 6, 1928
Herbert Rolph Tilley, for 25 years Manager of the Confederation Life Association for the West Indies and Central America, with headquarters at Havana, Cuba, died Monday, February 6, 1928, at the home of his brother-in-law, Dr. Wallace Scott, 627 Sherbourne Street, Toronto. It was his custom to return to Canada each year about the end of June, and it was while on a trip to Western Canada on his last visit that he was taken ill. For the past three months he had been seriously ill.
In his position as Manager for the Confederation Life in the West Indies and Central America he did much to promote a proper appreciation of the value of life insurance in his business district and also won distinction at the home office in Toronto by his capacity for work. He was greatly esteemed by his staff and by the officers and directors of the company.
During the Northwest Rebellion in 1885 he saw active military service with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. He was a life member and one-time Commodore of the Toronto Canoe Club, a member of the Hunt Club, the Lambton Golf Club, the National Club, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Zetland Masonic Lodge, Toronto, and the Havana Golf and Country Club.
Herbert Rolph Tilley is survived by his widow; his mother, Mrs. W. E. Tilley, Bowmanville; and two brothers, Dr. A. S. Tilley, Bowmanville, and W. N. Tilley, K.C., and a sister, Mrs. A. N. Mitchell, in Toronto. Mr. Tilley was a son of the late Dr. W. E. Tilley, for years an inspector of Schools at Bowmanville and a leading figure in the educational life of the Province of Ontario. Mrs. G. Tower Ferguson, Mrs. W. K. Doherty, Mrs. C. Wilks and Mrs. Wallace Scott are sisters-in-law.
The service was held form Rosedale Presbyterian Church, February 8th, and was conducted by Rev. Wilfred Lewis, Minster, who also had charge of the service at the graveside.
The honorary pall-bearers were Sir Joseph Flavelle, Hon. G. Howard Ferguson, Messrs. E. R. Wood and J. K. Macdonald. The active pall-bearers were Messrs. J. H. Gundy, George S. Deeks, C. H. Willson, Charles S. Macdonald, C. P. Smith, J. Tower Boyd, T. Frank Matthews and T. Albert Brown.
Among the mourners were a brother of the deceased, W. N. Tilley, K.C., four brothers-in-law, A. N. Mitchell, W. K. Doherty, C. R. Wilks and Dr. Wallace Scott, and two nephews from Bowmanville, Messrs. Ross and Philp Tilley. Bowmanville Statesman, Feb. 9, 1928.

July 22, 1874 ~ August 14, 1940
Suddenly, on Wednesday, August 14, 1940, at the home of her sister, Mrs. George Tower Fergusson, 70 Madison Ave., Toronto, Lola Nancy, beloved wife of the late Herbert Rolph Tilley.
Private funeral to Mount Pleasant Cemetery took place Friday afternoon, August 16, 1940. Toronto Star, Aug. 17, 1940.
