William Herbert Montgomery (1886 ~ 1965)
4.7.2. Second child of Isabella Adams and Joseph Samuel Montgomery, William Herbert Montgomery, was born February 15, 1886, in Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario.
He married Mary Jane “May” Liggett, daughter of Thomas Liggett and Eleanor Mary Patton, October 1, 1927, in Guelph, Ontario and had three children:

W. Herbert Montgomery died July 23, 1965, aged 79 years and May Liggett Montgomery died August 13, 1971, aged 70 years in Midland, Ontario.

W. Herbert Montgomery
A life-long area resident, William Herbert Montgomery, died July 23, 1965 at St. Andrew’s Hospital, Midland, following a lengthy illness. He was in his 80th year.
Mr. Montgomery was born February 15, 1886 in Tay Township, the son of Isabella Adams and Joseph Montgomery. He was educated at the Ebenezer school and in 1927 married the former Mary Jane Liggett at Guelph. With the exception of a few years between 1926 and 1938 spent in Midland, he had lived at Lot 88, Con. 1, Tay Township where he farmed.
A member of the United Church, he served as steward and elder at Ebenezer and was secretary-treasurer of west Tay telephone system for many years. He also served as Ebenezer school trustee for a number of years.
Funeral service was conducted July 26 from A. Barrie and Sons funeral home by Rev. W. Morden. Burial was in the Waverley United Cemetery. Pallbearers were Grant Fagan, Orvil Fagan, Keith Wood, Lawrence Wood and Beverly Adams.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife; a son Joseph E., Paris, France; daughters, Aileen (Mrs. James Wallace), Midland, and Jean (Mrs. Graham Jones), Wyebridge; brother Roy Montgomery, Vasey; and sisters Ena (Mrs. Mervin Grigg), Midland, and Margie (Mrs. Elwood Fagan), Stroud. Also surviving are ten grandchildren.
Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the service came from Guelph, Chatham, Stroud, Barrie, Elmvale, Toronto, Peterborough and Port Perry. Midland Free Press, Aug. 4, 1965.
Mary Jane “May” Liggett Montgomery
August 9, 1899 ~ August 13, 1971
Mary Jane Montgomery, former teacher of Haliburton County and Tay Township, died August 13, 1971 at St. Andrew’s Hospital, Midland.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. G. Gillingham from Barrie and Stoddart Funeral Home, Midland, August 16. Interment took place at Waverley United Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers include William Young, Frank Young, Archer Colwill, Grant Fagan and John Blair.
Mrs. Montgomery was born August 9, 1899 in Guelph. She was the daughter of Mary Patten and Thomas Liggett, both deceased. She received her education at Guelph Collegiate Institute and Hamilton Normal School.
She was married to the late W. Herbert Montgomery in Guelph, 1927.
She held office in Ebenezer Women’s Institute and had been a member of the United Church Women’s group in Ebenezer and Midland.
Her hobbies were gardening and quilting.
She is survived by son Joseph Edwin, Midland Point; daughters, Mary Aileen Wallace, and Margaret Jean Jones, Midland; brothers, John Liggett, Guelph; Melvin Liggett, Chatham; sisters, Ina Liggett and Eleanor Hamilton, both of Guelph.
Out-of-town people attended the funeral service came from Toronto, Guelph, Chatham and Stroud. Midland Free Press, Sept. 15, 1971.
