Leila May Montgomery  (1892 ~ 1948)

 

4.7.5. Fifth child of Isabella Adams and Joseph Samuel Montgomery, Leila May Montgomery, was born February 8, 1892, in Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario. 

  She married John Colwill, son of William Colwill and Mary Ann Archer, on June 14, 1916, in Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario and had five children:  

 

 

  Leila M. Montgomery Colwill died August 2, 1948, aged 56 years and John Colwill died February 6, 1969, aged 87 years in Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario and are interred at Vasey Cemetery.

Leila M. Montgomery Colwill

Mrs. John Colwill died August 2, 1948, in her 57th year, following an illness of six weeks.

Born February, 1892, Leila May Montgomery received her education at Ebenezer. Mrs. Colwill came to Vasey as a bride, in 1916, where she resided until the time of her death. She was a member of Vasey United Church and the Women’s Association.

  A former pastor, Rev. L. E. West, conducted funeral service in Vasey United Church, August 5, with interment in Vasey Cemetery. Pallbearers were Grant and Orville Fagan, Harold Archer, Oscar Seymour, Edwin and Fred DeNure.

  Mrs. Colwill is survived by her husband John Colwill, one son, Archer, of Vasey, and three daughters: Viola, of Toronto, and Margaret and Alma of Vasey. Also surviving are three brothers, Herb Montgomery and Walter Montgomery, of Ebenezer; Roy Montgomery of Toronto; and two sisters, Mrs. Mervin Grigg (Ena), and Mrs. Elwood Fagan (Margaret), both of Ebenezer. A brother, Charles, died in World War I.

  Friends and relatives who attended from a distance included: Mr. and Mrs. R. Montgomery, Mrs. D. A. Lee, Mrs. Chas. Pierce, Dr. and Mrs. Robt. Colwill, Miss Alberta Fagan, Mrs. G. Tremeer, of Little Britain; Miss Josie Archer and sister, Annie, of Burketon; Mr. and Mrs. L. Cummings, Stroud; and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Jones, of Midland. Midland Free Press, Aug. 10, 1948.

 

John Colwill

November 21, 1881 ~ February 6, 1969

A Tay Township resident for 84 years, John Colwill, 87, died February 6, 1969 at Beechwood Private Hospital, Penetanguishene, as the result of a coronary thrombosis.

  Funeral service was held February 9 from A. Barrie and Sons funeral home, with Rev. Allison Haynes officiating. Following temporary entombment in Lakeview Chapel vault, interment will be made in Vasey Union Cemetery.

  Honorary pallbearers were Oscar Seymour, Frank Rumney, Roy Edwards, Frank Smitham, Ted Vasey and Earl Jones.

  Active pallbearers were Harold Cowden, Kenneth Robinson, Clifford Irish, Charles Robinson, John Jones and Thomas Robinson.

  Son of the late former Mary Ann Archer and William Colwill, he was born November 21, 1881, at Waverley and received his education at Vasey and Moore’s Business College, Toronto. His wife, the former Leila May Montgomery, who he married in June, 1916, at Ebenezer, predeceased him. Occupied as a farmer at Vasey, Mr. Colwill had lived all his lifetine at Con. 5 and 6, Tay Township, until the past eight years when he took up residence with Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ironside in Don Mills and Sunnyside, Midland. 

  A member of the United Church at Vasey, he served as Elder there and also taught Sunday School. He was an honorary member of Loyal Orange Lodge No. 622. An Orange service was held February 8 at 7:45 p.m.

  Mr. Colwill is survived by one son, Robert Archer Colwill, Barrie; daughters, Viola May Colwill and Margaret Leila Colwill, both of Toronto, and Mary Alma (Mrs. Arnold Ironside), Sunnyside, Midland; three grandchildren, Wendy and Marilyn Colwill, and David Ironside. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Robert Colwill and sisters, Jennie (Mrs. William Irwin), and Bertha (Mrs. George Seymour).

  Relatives and friends attending the service were from Orillia, Vasey, Toronto, North Bay, Stroud, Barrie, Wyebridge, Richmond Hill, Victoria Harbour and Elmvale. Midland Free Press, Mar. 26, 1969.
