A. J. Harvey Strike
March 15, 1861 ~ October 31, 1924
One of the leading Methodist ministers of Ottawa in the person of Rev. A. J. H. Strike, pastor of Ottawa South Methodist Church died in Perth last evening at the residence of his son, after an illness of several months. News of his death has been received with deepest sorrow by not only his congregation with whom he was most popular, but by a particularly wife circle of friends throughout the city and by his brother ministers.
Rev. Mr. Strike, who was in his 64th year, had not enjoyed good health since the summer. He had conducted service a couple of times in August. His substitute at his church was Rev. John Webster. A few weeks ago Rev. Mr. Strike underwent an operation in Toronto.
The late minister accepted the pastorate of Ottawa South Meth-odist Church, in June, 1922, and his term would...expired until June next year. Latering heartily into the work of his new charge he had succeeded in making it one of the most flourishing churches in the city and in February this year his congregation wiped out the church debt. His many lovable qualities and sincerity endeared him to his congregation who deeply mourn his passing.
Rev. Mr. Strike was born at Port Hope, Ont. For many years he was a member of the Montreal Conference. He served in a number of pastorates among which were Granby, Que., Lindsay, Deseronto, Bowmanville and Morrisburg. Prior to coming to Ottawa he was pastor of Ashbury Methodist Church at Perth, Ont., for two years, where he also established himself in the hearts of his congregation.
Rev. Mr. Strike is survived by his widow and two sons, Messrs. E. Glenn Strike, of this city, and W. Ross Strike of Perth. Mr. E. G. Stroke was called in Perth last evening.
The funeral of the late pastor will be held in Ottawa, the body arriving here this evening. It will be taken to the parsonage, 266 Sunnyside Ave. Burial will take place Monday afternoon in Beechwood Cemetery. Service will be held in Ottawa South Methodist Church. Ottawa Journal, Nov. 1, 1924.
