Stanley G. Bloxom

July 28, 1924 ~ July 23, 2002

A long-time Elliot Lake resident is being remembered fondly by family, friends and co-workers.

Stanley Bloxom passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at the age of 77.

Long time friend and companion of Germaine Ethier of Elliot Lake, beloved father of Stanley Jr., companion Brenda, of Elliot Lake, Robert, wife Joanne, Timothy, wife Eva, both of Elliot Lake, Cindy, husband Don Heirview of Elmville. Grandfather of Michael, Courtney, Victoria, Dominique, Leona. Great-grandfather of Gabriell and Jocelyn.

Instrumental in the construction of many of the city’s structures and well-known in law circles, Bloxom was a pioneer, according to friend and former employee Dwayne Gorman.

“Stan was a survivor with a pioneering spirit. I first met him in 1959, just a couple years after he made Elliot Lake his home,” recalls Gorman. “He was one of the most generous people I ever knew.

“The city has seen its share of rough times and Stan was always there to help. He handled fuel distribution and if someone couldn’t afford it, he would give it to them on credit.”

Bloxom and his brother Jack established a plumbing and construction business, Bloxom Brothers, in Weston, Ontario before he moved north. He was the first to obtain a plumber master’s license in Elliot Lake says his companion, Germaine Ethier.

“He worked on several projects, such as the Rio Algom Plaza, Dieppe Mall, Hillside Plaza and Strawberry Park, to name a few,” explains Ethier. “He was always proud of the work he did and the contributions he made to Elliot Lake. Stan loved it here.”

His versatility didn’t stop there. He was also an active member of the local area Progressive Conservative Party Association. That led to his appointment as Justice of the Peace in June, 1979. He went on to be appointed Senior J. P. for Northeastern Region of Ontario in the early 1980s.

“Stan loved sitting on the bench, but he loved weddings more.  He performed hundreds of them over his 25 year career as J.P., until his retirement in 1995.”

A veteran of WWII, he volunteered in 1941 and served in the Navy. He was active with the Elliot Lake Royal Canadian Legion Branch #561 and served two terms as Legion President, in 1982 and 1983, receiving his 50 year pin in 1999.

Memorial to be held Friday, August 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Elliot Lake Royal Canadian Legion Branch #561. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetes or Health and Stroke Foundations or St. Joseph’s Manor new long term facility would be appreciated. Elliot Lake Standard, July 31, 2002.
