Albert W. Pearce

Julu 1, 1913 ~ January 28, 2000

Albert William Pearce was born on Silver Creek Farm, Newcastle to Henry Rupert Pearce and Minne Pearl Rickard and lived his entire life in Clarke Township, now Clarington.

On January 4, 1941, he married Myrtle Eva (Fowler) Patterson, and together they had four children. They were a loving and close couple for 51 years.

Starting as a child in 1918, with his sister Peg, he began delivering milk when Dr. Walton-Ball, a summer resident at the lake, asked the Pearce’s to supply him with milk. As other cottagers moved in, the Pearce’s found themselves in the dairy business. Albert didn’t graduate grade 12, he quit that spring because he was needed to work at the farm. In 1934, when Mitch Hepburn’s government brought in a law requiring the pasteurization of milk, the Pearce’s sold their dairy business to the LeGresley’s of Newcastle, who owned and operated Newcastle Dairy. Besides carrying on the farm, Albert worked for Newcastle Dairy, then for Glen Rae Dairy, and finally for the dairy division of Beatrice Foods as one proprietor succeeded another.

About 1963 the farm was sold to Reginald Steen, a descendant of early owners. Albert, his wife Myrtle, and their four children and mother Pearl moved to a new bungalow built on a lot severed from the farm to the east of the old house. Albert retired in 1978 and was honoured by friends and relatives by a party held at the Newcastle Community Hall. In 1995 after Myrtle passed away, he sold his house and moved to Parkview Apartments in 1996.

He was a life-long member of the Newcastle United Church, serving on many different boards. He started the Couple Club with his wife Myrtle, and they both loved square dancing. Albert always loved playing cards and used to go to Solina on Friday nights. He was on the committee to get a bowling alley started in Newcastle, and bowled since 1959, starting the Newcastle Seniors Bowling League. He was a founding member of the Newcastle Seniors, and at Parkview he organized card parties on Wednesday afternoons.

If you couldn’t find Albert in the summer, he probably was at Kendal Park, Soper Creek, or Newcastle Memorial Park watching baseball. In the fall you’d find him watching the Durham Lords (Durham College), and in the winter watching hockey, even going to Wasaga Beach to follow a Newcastle team. He loved gardening, Blue Jay Baseball, the Toronto Maple Leafs, but most of all he loved his grandchildren.

Albert will be sadly missed by his four children: Larry and his wife Barb of Newcastle, Ric and his wife Marilyn of Port Perry, Wayne and his wife Kim of Bethany, and Elizabeth and her husband Ted Walton of Bowmanville, and his grandchildren: Mike, Jeff, Kevin, Trisha, Viki and John, Kirk and Gail, Adam and Jason. Brother of Kenneth Pearce of Stratford, Peggy Visser of Toronto, Patricia Stinson of Chesley and Margaret Hockin of Oakville, and missed by many nieces, nephews and lots of cousins. Friends called at Newcastle Funeral Home, and his funeral service was held at Newcastle United Church on January 31, 2000, followed by interment with his wife Myrtle at Bowmanville Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all their relatives, friends, and neighbors for their kind words, cards and expressions of sympathy. He will be sadly missed by all. Bowmanville Statesman, Mar. 15, 2000.
