Helmet Koenig
March 18, 1937 ~ January 6, 2004
Helmet “Pappy” Koenig a long time resident of Chetwynd, B.C. passed away on January 6, 2004 in Chetwynd, at the age of 66 years. A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Legion Hall in Chetwynd, Pastor Bill Evans officiated, interment followed in the Tuscoola Mountain Cemetery, Chetwynd, B.C.
Helmet Koenig commonly known as Pappy was born on March 18, 1937, in Gallahad, Alberta; to parents Fred and Justine Koenig. He was the seventh of ten children.
Pappy had a handicap, but the tremendous strength in his arms and upper shoulders made him one of the most physically fit men I knew. His outstanding strength of character made him stronger yet, he always seen the good in others.
In forty-four years of working for Fort St. John Lumber and Canfor, Pappy made many friends and was respected by everyone. Clay Collins summed it up saying, “Pappy was the finest man he ever knew.” In the early part of his saw-filing career, Pappy worked with our good friend, Forest Piper. With Pappy’s knowledge and with what Pappy learned from Forest, he was know far and wide as one of the most knowledgeable saw filers of our time. He never made an excuse for a piece of equipment that wasn’t cutting rightlhe just found a solution for the problem.
Pappy has a real sense of humour, he and George Schreiber would needle each other about who’s department the problem was, then the two of them would go out and you could rest assured knowing the problem was fixed.
Pappy liked woodworking, camping, hobby farming, horses, fishing, softball, curling and most dearly he loved hockey. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge for many years.
Pappy was predeceased by his parents and eight of his brothers and sisters.
He will fondly remembered by his wife, Carol, and his children: Kyle, Dwayne, Kathy, Curt, Carl, Bruce, Brian, and 15 grandchildren, also his brother Don, his sister-in-laws, Pat, Margaret, Alice and many many friends. Memorial arrangements were under the care of Reynars Funeral Home and Crematorium, Dawson Creek, B.C.
