Samuel Ferguson

January 6, 1844 ~ October 17, 1920

The Township of West Luther loss another of its pioneers in the death of Samuel Ferguson, after a brief illness, on October 17, 1920, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Born in Ireland in the County of Tyrone, he came to Canada with his parents at the age of five and settled in the township of Manvers in Durham County. In 1875 he married Miss Sarah Adams of Clarke Township and three years later moved to West Luther, settling on the farm now occupied by his son George. Later on he bought the adjoining farm on which he spent the rest of his days. He came to these parts with a very limited capital, but being of industrious habits and a rugged physical constitution his labor and superior skill in business management soon gave him an established place as a successful farmer. He gradually added to his holdings until at his retirement from active operations, he had the satisfaction of seeing three of his sons occupying a block of five hundred acres of the finest farm land in Wellington County. Mr. Ferguson saw the importance of animal husbandry in farming and was a highly successful breeder and feeder of live stock. His special interest appears to have been in horses and he came to be looked upon as an authority in that line. He furnished a striking example of the reward that agriculture holds out to the person who knows how to combine the use of muscle and brain in the business. Mr. Ferguson was widely and honorably known throughout the district. He was a member of the Orange order and of the Presbyterian church at Conn and took an active interest in building up the congregations present property. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on October 29, 1920, and was conducted by Rev. Mr. Moyer. The following fellow Orangemen acted as pall bearers: Mssrs. George Perry, James Graham, Hugh Morrison, Wm. Brown, James Bradshaw and Alex. Donald. The brethern of the order also took part in the service at the grave. Nine children survive: David, of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. James Hunter, Mrs. Robert McFarlane, Talbert, George, Mrs. Fred Gear, Leonard, Erwin, and Mrs. John Smith, all living in their home vicinity. Mrs. Ferguson predeceased him by nearly two years, and his son Robert by eight. Mount Forest Confederate, Nov. 4, 1920.
