Vernon John Royal Smith  

(1923 ~ 2008)

 

5.7.10.2. Second child of Ida I. Ferguson and John D. Smith, Vernon John Royal Smith, was born September 3, 1923, in Arthur Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. 

  He married Charlotte Berniece Herriot, daughter of James Henry Herriot and Frances Keziah Stovey Small, September 9, 1942, Conn, W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario and had four children:

  Vernon J. Smith died September 29, 2008, aged 85 years in Mount Forest, Ontario and Charlotte B. Herriot Smith died August 26, 2006, aged 82 years in Harriston, Ontario and are interred at Mount Forest Cemetery.

 

 

----- MARRIAGE -----

 

Smith—Herriot

Standards of pink and white gladioli in a settting of small cedar trees, decorated the chancel of Westcott United Church, Conn, for the wedding at 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 1942, of Charlotte Bernice Herriot, only daughter of of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Herriot, of West Luther, and Vernon John Royal Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Smith, of Arthur Township, the Rev. Gordon Harris officiating.

  Lohengrin’s wedding march was played by Mrs. Ray Howes, cousin of the bride, who also played "I Love You Truly", during the signing of the register. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a floor-length gown of ivory sheer, trimmed with shirring and insets of lace in the bodice. A halo headdress hed her finger-tip veil in place, and she carried an arm bouquet of Briarcliff roses, gladioli tips and fern. She was attended by her cousin, Miss Mabel Manion who wore a floor-length dress of heaven blue sheer, with halo headdress to match and silver accessories. Her flowers were Talisman roses.

  The flower-girl, little Miss Eileen Hunter, of Conn, cousin of the groom, wore a long dress of rose sheer over taffeta, and she carried a basket of pnik and white sweet peas and delphinium.

  Mr. Melville Ferguson, of Conn, cousin of the groom, was best man; Cecil Herriot, the bride’s brother, and Bert Hunter, the groom’s cousin, were ushers. The bride’s mother wore a blue crepe dress with orchid corsage and blue hat, and the groom’s mother was gown in light navy blue with blue hat, and corsage of gladioli tips and fern. About twenty-five guests were present at the wedding supper which was served at the bride’s home.

  Later in the evening a reception was held in the Woman’s Institute Hall at Conn, over two hundred guests being present. The hall was decorated with pin k and white streamers, cedars and gladioli. Music was supplied by the Wright orchestra. For the wedding trip to Midland the bride wore a navy crepe dress and coat with rose hat and black accessories. Vernon Smith died at Louise Marshall Hospital, Mount Forest on Monday, September 29, 2008. Vernon John Royal Smith of Mount Forest was in his 86th year. Beloved husband of the late Charlotte (Herriot) Smith. Loved father of Gary Smith and wife Gwynne of Mount Forest, Cheryl Giardina of Burlington, Rhoda Remisch and husband Andy of Dundas and the late Roger Smith. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Ilene Moore of Fergus, Cecil Smith and wife June of Mono Mills and Sherman Smith and wife Joyce of Guelph. Survived also by his many nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Hendrick Funeral Home, Mount Forest on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, October 2 at 11 a.m. Interment at Mount Forest Cemetery. At Caressant Care Nursing Home, Harriston, on Saturday, August 26, 2006. Charlotte Bernice (Herriot) Smith, of Mount Forest, in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of Vernon Smith. Loved mother of Gary Smith and wife Gwynne of Mount Forest, Cheryl Giardina of Burlington, Rhoda Remisch and husband Andy of Dundas and the late Roger Smith. Lovingly remembered by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law of Barbara Herriot of Orillia, Ilene Moore and husband Wray of Fergus, Cecil Smith and wife June of Mono Mills and Sherman Smith and wife Joyce of Guelph. Survived also by her many nieces and nephews. Roger DSmith

September 30, 1944 ~ August 21, 1990

On Tuesday, August 21, 1990 at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Roger Dean Smith, aged 45 years of Elmira.

  Son of Vernon and Charlotte Smith of Conn; dear father of Robert and his fiancée Kim Rau of Kitchener, Sherry Lichty and her husband Robert of Waterloo, Jeffrey and his friend Amanda King of Kitchener; grandfather of Erika, Christopher Adam and Tamara Lynn; brother of Gary and his wife Gwynne of Mount Forest, Cheryl (Mrs. Santo Giardina) of Burlington, Rhoda (Mrs. Andy Remisch) of Niagara Falls.

  Friends may call at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, where the family will receive their friends on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. followed by interment in Elmira Union Cemetery.
