John Farrelly
1822 ~ October 13, 1900
In Salem, October 13, 1900, John Farrelly, aged 78 years.
The subject of this obituary notice was born in the County of Leitrim, Ireland, in 1822, and left the shores of his native land, at the age of 25 years, for the then wilds of the Township of Peel, where he purchased a homestead and settled down to the hardships incident to pioneer life. A robust constitution backed by an earnest desire to make a comfortable home enabled him to succeed in raising his large family, and afterwards to retire from active life at the age of 67 years, to the village of Salem. He served his township as school trustee for many years. In politics he was an intelligent Conservative, and in religion a consistent Methodist. As a neighbour and friend he was all that the most exacting could desire, and he was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. A goodly number of old friends followed his remains to the Elora cemetery Monday afternoon.
The aged partner is left to mourn his loss. The family consists of Thomas, and Joseph, in Parry Sound; James in Peel; Mrs. Isaac French, in Peel; Mrs. Nicholas Stuart, Hamilton; John, Charles, Robert Henry, Chicago; Levi in San Francisco, California; Ephraim in Wisconsin.
