Mildred Isabelle Ferguson  (1916 ~ 1999)

 

5.7.1.2. Second child of David S. Ferguson and Sarah C. Sinclair, Mildred Isabelle Ferguson, was born July 22, 1916, in Holstein, Egremont Twp., Grey Co., Ontario. 

  She married Avery Eugene Caldwell, son of Robert Earl Caldwell and Edyth Mae Ellinger, May 15, 1941, Denver, Colorado and had three children:

  Mildred I. Ferguson Caldwell died in August 21, 1999, aged 83 years and Avery E. Caldwell died September 19, 1987, aged 75 years in Longmont, Colorado, U.S.

Mildred I. Ferguson Caldwell

Mildred Isabelle Ferguson Caldwell of Longmont died Saturday, August 21, 1999, in Longmont. She was 83.

  She was born July 22, 1916, in Holstein, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Sadie Sinclair Ferguson and David Samuel Ferguson. The family moved to Denver in 1918 to enable her father to receive high altitude treatment for tuberculosis.

  Mrs. Caldwell graduated from Denver’s North High School at 16 and went to work to help support her family. After a brief stint as an elevator operator at the Republic Building, she became an office assistant in a Denver medical office.

  She married Avery Caldwell in 1941 in Denver and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1942.

  During World War II the Caldwells resided in San Mateo, Calif., then returned to Denver. In 1958, the couple moved to Longmont where Avery opened and managed the local Empire Savings and Loan Association branch office. Mr. Caldwell died in 1987.

  Well known for her generous spirit and twinkle in her eye, Mrs. Caldwell was active as a homemaker, volunteer and mother and worked many years as a legal secretary for Flanders McCarty and Wood in Longmont.

  A devoted Anglophile, she traveled a number of times to the British Isles. She also enjoyed bridge, current affairs, aerobics, reading and attending theatrical and musical productions and the various activities of her children and grandchildren. She received a “fan of the year” award from a grandson’s baseball team.

  She was a member and past president of the Sunshine Club and Chaper C.J. P.E.O. and served on the City of Longmont Library Board.

  She is survived by two sons, John and his wife Kathy of Longmont and Tom and his wife Jana of Greely; a daughter, Kathleen and her husband Matthew Freedman of North Brooksville, Maine; five grandchildren, Reed and Bradley Caldwell of Longmont, Ben and Rachel Freedman of Maine and Arda Mohamud of Rochester, Minn.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ivan and Evelyn Caldwell of Lincoln, Neb.; three other sisters-in-law, Claire Caldwell of Boulder, Mavis Ferguson of Fort Collins and Willamene Arner of Grand Junction; and several nieces and nephews.

  She was predeceased in death by two brothers, Albert and Irvine Ferguson.

  Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Family members will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. Cremation and private burial to follow.

  A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, at the First Congregational Church, 1500 9th Ave., with the Rev. Michael Leite officiating.

Avery E. Caldwell

September 9, 1912 ~ September 19, 1987

Avery E. Caldwell, father of City Councilman John Caldwell, died Saturday, September 19, 1987, at the age of 75. He was born September 9, 1912, in Swanton, Nebraska, and raised in Swanton and York, Nebraska.

  Mr. Caldwell studied at York College and the University of Nebraska and received a degree in business administration from the University of Denver.

  He married Mildred Ferguson in 1941 in Denver.

  During World War II he served as a flight navigator with United Air Lines in the Pacific under contract with the U.S. Air Force Air Transport Command.

  Mr. Caldwell’s career in accounting and construction-related finance spanned nearly 45 years and took him to various positions in Nebraska, Illinois, and Colorado. He joined Empire Savings Building and Loan Associates in Denver in 1956 and moved to Longmont two years later to found and manage the Empire Branch. He retired as manager in 1972, but continued with Empire Savings for another five years as an appraiser, loan underwriter and adviser to Empire president James Carpenter. He was elected to the Empire board of directors in 1972, a position he held until his retirement in 1985.

  Mr. Caldwell’s community activities included the boards of directors of the Longmont Chamber of Commerce, Longmont Kiwanis Club, Longmont Community Hospital and the boards of trustees and deacons of the First Congregational Church. He also served on the city park and golf advisory board and the Heart of Longmont advisory committee. 

  Mr. Caldwell and his wife, Mildred, raised three children in Longmont: John, Tom and Kathy. Funeral arrangements are pending. Longmont Times, Sept. 20, 1987.
