HunterMcPherson

On Saturday, November 7, 1953, Monticello United Church was the scene of a quiet but pretty double ring ceremony, in which Lorna Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hunter, was united in marriage with George Wynne McPherson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John O. McPherson. The Rev. Mr. George Leck officiated. The church was decorated with ferns and 'mums.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor-length gown of nylon tulle over slipper sating with Chantilly lace bodice descending into peplum. The sweetheart neckline was embroidered with seed pearls and rhinestones, and pearl necklace. A finger-tip veil was caught by a headdress of orange blossoms, and she carried a white Bible adorned with red sweetheart roses and white satin streamers. The bride was attended by her sister, Marlene, wearing a strapless gown of mauve tulle over silk, and brocaded jacket, and a headdress of mauve forget-me-nots. She carried a cascade of yellow 'mums.

The groom was attended by his brother, Robert McPherson. Mrs. George Leck played the wedding music and during the signing of the register, "The Lord's Prayer."

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride. The bride's mother received in a dress of navy tricotine crepe with navy accessories and corsage of pink roses. The groom's mother assisted wearing green tissue taffeta with yellow accessories and a corsage of yellow roses.

For a motor trip throughout Eastern Ontario, the bride wore a grey gabardine suit with red accessories and corsage of red roses. Mount Forest Confederate, Nov. 26, 1953.

William J. McPherson

November 24, 1849 ~ February 9, 1920

Mr. W. J. McPherson who came to the village from East Luther a few months ago, died Monday morning, February 9, 1920 after a week’s illness from pneumonia. He was up the street a week ago Saturday, showed no evidence of any cold or illness and was taken down on Monday. From the first his condition was considered serious, and despite tender care and nursing the end came in a week. Mr. McPherson was born in Chinguacousy Township and came to Luther 48 years ago settling on the 7th Con-cession. About 16 years later on account of failing health he came to this village, remaing for 4 years, and built the house he bought last fall. With this exception he spent his years off the farm, which he made one of the best in the vicinity. He was not only a very successful farmer, but a man of high ideals, honorable motives and strictest integrity. In politics he was a strong Conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian, being an elder for many years. In 1882 he married Elizabeth Adeline Fawcett of Drayton, who proved an able helpmate, and survives her husband with the following children:—Robert H., of Druis, Sask.; Mrs. A. McGill, of Plenty, Sask.; Mrs. Edward Townsend and John O., of East Luther, and Mrs. B. O. Collins of Haverhill, Mass. The funeral took palce to-day to the Union Cemetery.¾Star and Vidette. John H. McPherson

July 10, 1822 ~ January 8, 1903

One by one the links that connect the past with the present are being broken, and last week [January 8, 1903] the death of the late John McPherson removed one of Garafraxa’s earliest pioneers. Born in Ireland eighty years ago, the deceased came to Canada with his parents when about five years of age, settling in Chinguacouchy. About fifty years ago, he and his young partner in life forged their way through the bush to Garafraxa, and settled on the farm which was home to them for half a century, and when they saw their own grow up, some to prosper in life’s journey and other to be called home early. Of a family of nine, five survive: Wm. James and Mrs. Geo. Hilborn in Luther, Mrs. H. Reid of East Garafraxa, and George and Emily at home. John McPherson who founded the first newspaper in Grand Valley, was a son of the deceased. The late John McPherson was a man of high ideals, whose greatest pleasure was to hear of his family’s success, and to whom he set a splendid example. He was a staunch Presbyterian and a loyal Conservative. He rarely knew what sickness meant, but about four years ago he lost his sight. On the 12th of July last he took to his bed, the result of a slight stroke of paralysis, and until a week ago seemed no better or worse. During this time, however, he grew weaker and weaker, and slept into the great beyond about 4 o’clock on Thursday morning. His aged widow, feels the loss of her beloved husband, and is in very poor health. The remains were interred in Price’s Corners cemetery on Friday. Grand Valley Star & Vidette, Jan. 15, 1903.
