John Irvine Ferguson  (1920 ~ 1980)

 

5.7.1.3. Third child of David S. Ferguson and Sarah C. Sinclair, John Irvine Ferguson, was born November 30, 1920, in Denver, Colorado, U.S. 

  He married Mavis Laurene Stephenson, daughter of Clyde Burge Stephenson and Goldie May Wilson, August 4, 1945, Denver, Colorado and had two children:

  J. Irvine Ferguson died October 27, 1980, aged 59 years and Mavis L. Stephenson Ferguson died October 11, 2000, aged 80 years in Fort Collins, Colorado, U.S.

J. Irvine Ferguson

Irv Ferguson, 59, of 723 Eastdale Dr., for 20 years head baseball coach at Colorado State University and head coach of the last Fort Collins high school basketball team to win a state championship, died Monday, October 27, 1980, at home after a lengthy illness.

  A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Edward F. Ostertag officiating. The body was cremated.

  Mr. Ferguson coached baseball at CSU from 1956 to 1975. His teams won two Skyline Conference Eastern Division titles and tied for the Western Athletic Conference Norther Division title in 1972. His overall record was 203-352.

  He also coached basketball at Fort Collins High School from 1949 to 1955, coaching the team to the state title in 1954. He also was director of physical education and athletics at FCHS.

  For 15 years, he was an assistant basketball coach at CSU.

  Mr. Ferguson was born November 30, 1920, in Denver. He married Mavis Stephenson August 4, 1945, in Meeker. She survives.

  As an undergraduate at CSU, Mr. Ferguson lettered in basketball and baseball, batting .392 in 1942.

  After graduating in 1946, he coached and taught three years at Rocky Ford High School, winning three league basketball titles and placing twice in the state basketball tournament. He received a master’s degree from CSU in 1948.

  After retiring from coaching, he was an assistant professor of physical education at CSU.

  Mr. Ferguson was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church  and has been a member of Elka Lodge 804. He was a captain in an Army tank battalion during World War II.

  Other survivers are two sons; Jim and Steve Ferguson of Fort Collins; a sister, Mildred Caldwell of Longmont; and four grandchildren.

Mavis L. Stephenson Ferguson

January 15, 1920 ~ October 11, 2000

Mavis L. Ferguson, 80, of Fort Collins, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at Blue Grouse Health Care Center.

  A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Harold Warren will officiate. Cremation will be conducted. Interment will be in the St. Luke’s Columbarium.

  Mavis Stephenson was born January 15, 1920 in Meeker, to Clyde Stephenson and Goldie Wilson Stephenson.

  She graduated from high school in Meeker in 1938 and studied home economics at Colorado State University.

  She married Irv J. Ferguson on August 4, 1945, in Meeker.

  Mrs. Ferguson was a book specialist at the Colorado State University book store from 1939 to 1983.

  She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and worked with its Alter Guild. She also was a member of Questers and P.E.O. She enjoyed collecting antiques and traveling.

  Survivors include two sons, Steve A. Ferguson and Jim M. Ferguson of Fort Collins, two sisters, Zelda Frandson of Luveland and Doris Warren of Meeker; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the CSU Library or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in care of Reager Funeral Home. The Coloradoan, Oct. 13, 2000.
