Samuel James Ferguson  (1912 ~ 1983)

 

5.7.3.2. Second child of Robert J. Ferguson and Mary E. Smith, Samuel James Ferguson, was born October 19, 1912, in W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. 

  He married Dorothy Pauline Feairs, daughter of Frederick Feairs and Charlotte May Soper, June 29, 1940, Arthur, Wellington Co., Ontario and had three children:

  S. James Ferguson died June 18, 1983, aged 70 years and Dorothy P. Feairs Ferguson died February 14, 1996, aged 72 years in Mount Forest, Ontario, and are interred at Mount Forest Cemetery.

S. James Ferguson

S. James Ferguson passed away peacefully at Louise Marshall Hospital on Saturday, June 18, 1983, in his 71st year after a lengthy illness.

  He was born in Arthur Township, the son of the late Robert and Mary (Smith) Ferguson. After farming for a number of years, he and his wife retired in Mount Forest nine years ago. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

  He was married on June 29, 1940, to the former Dorothy Feairs. He is also survived by three sons and their wives, Robert J. (Eddie) and Dorothy, Laverne and Marlene, and Larry and Linda. Also survived by 15 grandchildren. Predeceased by one brother, Nelson.

  He rested at Hendrick Funeral Home. He was very much thought of as there were a number of flower arrangements and donations to the Heart Fund and others.

  Funeral services weer held Tuesday from the chapel, Rev. Lloyd Clifton officiating. Interment in the family plot, Mount Forest Cemetery.

  Pallbearers were Donald Ferguson, Carl McLean, Lawrence Smith, Gordon Smith, and grandsons Brian and Dale Ferguson. Flowerbearers for their grandpa were Paula, Susan, David and Ronald Ferguson. Mount Forest Confederate, July 6, 1983.

 

Dorothy P. Feairs Ferguson

August 2, 1923 ~ February 14, 1996

Sincere sympathy has been extended to the Ferguson families and other relatives on the passing of (Mrs. James) Dorothy Ferguson, at Louise Marshall Hospital on Thursday, February 14, 1996, in her 73rd year.

  Dorothy was the youngest daughter of Fred and Charlotte (Soper) Feairs and grew up in their home in Cedarville. Following her marriage to James Ferguson, they farmed in Arthur Township for many years, later retiring to Mount Forest, where her husband predeceased her in 1983. Many friends and relatives called at the Hendrick Funeral Home on Friday to offer sympathy or attended the funeral on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment in Mount Forest Cemetery. Mount Forest Confederate, Feb. 21, 1996.

 

Frederick Feairs

June 11, 1878 ~ December 27, 1961

A long-time resident of Cedarville and district Frederick Feairs, passed away at Centre Grey Hospital, Markdale, Wednesday, December 27, 1961, in his 84th year.

  A long period of declining health followed by a paralytic stroke was borne with much patience and fortitude.

  Mr. Feairs was born in England, June 11, 1878, the youngest son of John Feairs and Elizabeth Dorking. While all were quite young the family was orphaned. The eldest, Elizabeth, Mrs. William Fincham, remained in the old land. At the age of eight years Frederick, with his brothers, James and Grimmer, both now deceased, came to Ontario via the Dr. Barnard homes as had many others. He began a new life in a strange land at Lot 6, Con. 5, Proton.

  He attended No. 9 School Endowed with a rich baritone voice, he took part in the choirs of both the former Methodist and Presbyterian Churches. A conscientious workman, he learned the stone mason trade, plying that for many years, but he could do many things well. When unable to do strenuous labour, he took care of the village school for a number of years, and had great pride in gardening.

  In 1904 he married Charlotte Soper, who with the family of fours sons and four daughters, survive, namely, James, Cedarville; Edward, Kelvington, Sask.; Russel, Laurel; Wilbert, Mount Forest; Elizabeth, Mrs. Roy Hunter, Monticello; Mildred, Mrs. Bruce Ritchie; Emma, Mrs. Earnest Kerr; Dorothy, Mrs. James Ferguson, all of Mount Forest. There are 34 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Services were held at the Gardiner Funeral Home, Mount Forest, on Saturday, December 30, 1961. They were conducted by the Rev. A. G. Hewitt and the Rev. F. A. Pickering, whose messages of hope were of much comfort to the bereaved. The hymn, “Rock of Ages,” was sung by those assembled, while another favourite of the deceased, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” was rendered by Mr. Ritchie Stewart. 

  Besides a great many from the Cedarville, Conn and Mount Forest areas, friends were in attendance from Campbellville, Malton, Hamilton, Monticello, Guelph, Kitchener, Bolton, Dundalk, Durham, Laurel, Woodstock and Neustadt.

  Pallbearers were neighbours, John Bell, Finlay Kerr, John McEachern, Elwyn Hock-ridge, Donald A. Gillies, and Hugh Keith.

  A large and beautiful array of floral tributes was carried by grandsons Eddie Ferguson, George Hunter, Wilbert Ritchie, Beverley Feairs, Leverne Ferguson, Robert Kerr.

  Committal rites were held in the mortuary chapel at Mount Forest cemetery. Interment will be at Walker's Cemetery, Proton Township in the Spring. Mount Forest Confederte, Jan. 4, 1962.

 

Charlotte M. Soper Feairs

May 31, 1886 ~ September 21, 1972

Mrs. Frederick Feairs, a life long resident of Cedarville and area, passed away at Louise Marshall Hospital on Thursday, September 21, 1972, in her 87th year.

  Mrs. Feairs was the former Charlotte May Soper, eldest daughter of the late James Soper and his wife, the former Jane Barr, and was born at Lot 16, Concession 9, Proton, May 31, 1886. Following her marriage to Frederick Feairs in 1904 the couple resided at lots 17 and 13, Concession 5, Proton, until 1915 when they moved to the village. Her husband predeceased her in December, 1961, in his 84th year.

  Throughout the ups and downs of a long and busy life, Mrs. Feairs, who was known to a wide circle of friends as “Mom” had a cheerful, optimistic outlook and a hopeful faith that prevailed during her long and trying illness. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, a kind and helpful neighbour and friend.

  Mrs. Feairs is survived by four sons and four daughters, James, Cedarville; Edward, Kelvington, Sask.; Russell, R.R.2, Laurel; and Bert, Mount Forest; Mildred, Mrs. Bruce Ritchie, Mount Forest; Elizabeth, Mrs. Roy Hunter, Fergus; Emma, Mrs. Ernest Kerr, Mount Forest; Dorothy, Mrs. James Ferguson, Mount Forest; 39 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Soper, Cedarville.

  The largely attended funeral service was held Saturday, September 23, at the Hendrick Funeral Chapel, Mount Forest. Rev. David K. Byrd brought the messages at the service and at the graveside.  Interment was in Walker's Cemetery, Proton.

  The pallbearers were six grandsons: Wilbert Ritchie, Brian Feairs, Lloyd Hunter, Eddie Ferguson, Arnold Feairs and Robert Kerr.

  The flower were borne by six granddaughters, Patricia Feairs, Linda Rice, Brenda Harris, Eleanor Schnurr, Marilyn Craig and Lorna McPherson. Mount Forest Confederate, Oct. 5, 1972.
