Herbert Brownlee Love, a well-known resident of Egremont Township, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, September 30, 1964. Although in failing health for a few years, his death came as a shock to his family and friends. He was in his 70th year.

On December 24, 1919, he married Mary Neil McQueen of Durham, who predeceased him on October 2, 1930. He possessed a kind and cheerful disposition and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Left to mourn his loss are one daughter, Margaret, Mrs. Margaret Gillies, and one son, Brownlee on the home farm; also two grandchildren; one sister, Miss Edna Love, and one brother, Frank Love, both of Holstein. He was predeceased by one sister, Lottie, Mrs. T. A. McLaughlin, Toronto and four brothers, George, William, John and Wesley.

Mary N. McQueen Love

December 12, 1894 ~ October 2, 1930

Mrs. Herbert Love, of Egremont, and until 11 years ago a well-known resident of Durham, passed away on Thursday [October 2, 1930] night at her home near Dromore after an illness of only three weeks of heart trouble and influenza. For a considerable period of her last illness she had been attended by her mother, Mrs. J. McQueen of this town and everything possible was done to prolong her life but to no avail.

The late Mrs. Love was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McQueen of this town and was born in the township of Egremont, near Boothville, 36 years ago. When she was ten years of age she came with her parents to Durham, where she lived until 11 years ago when she was married to Mr. Herbert Love and has since resided on their farm, Lot 25, Concession 16.

Previous to her marriage Mrs. Love had graduated from the Mount Forest Business College and about 1915 was engaged in the store of J. D. Abraham, here, and subsequently was on the staff of the C.P.R. station here, where she remained for some years.

Surviving are her husband, Mr. Herbert Love, and two children, Margaret, aged 8 years, and Brownley, 4. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McQueen, here, and by three brothers, Alex. and Donald, in Walkerville, and Edward C., Toronto.

The funeral was held from her late home last Sunday afternoon, and the large number in attendance many of them from Durham, speaks of the respect in which the deceased was held. The service was taken by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Stewart, Presbyterian minister of Priceville, and interment was made in Amos Cemetery, Dromore—Durham Chronicle. Mount Forest Confederate, Oct. 16, 1930.

Henry Love

July 16, 1838 ~ October 28, 1918

On Monday evening, October 28, 1918, at his home in Egremont, Henry Love passed away at the age of 80 years, three months. He had been in delicate health for over a year and for the past nine months was confined to his bed. Deceased was born in Wilts, England and with his mother, sister and brothers came to Canada at the age of eighteen and settled near Bolton.

Thirty-two years ago he came to Egremont and settled on Lot 25, Con. 16. He leaves a widow, six sons and two daughters, William at Bolton; John and Wesley on 12th Con., Egremont; Frank on 2nd; George on 16th; Mrs. McLaughlin (Lottie) Toronto; Edna and Herbert at home. A brother John in Michigan also survives him. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Mr. Scott, Holstein, assisted by Rev. Mr. Huxtable, Toronto. The pall-bearers were John Plester, C. Smith, John Hincks, F. Seifried, C. Bosley and Thos. Atchison. Much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing friends in their bereavement. Durham Review, Nov. 7, 1918.

Mary J. Atchison Love

January 1, 1855 ~ March 11, 1924

On Tuesday of last week, March 11, 1924, as was noted in last week’s Review, this pioneer passed peacefully away in her 70th year. She was born near Bolton, Ont., and in 1876, was married to Mr. Henry Love, who predeceased her nearly 5½ years ago.    Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Atchison, and with her husband lived for ten years in King Township before moving to Lot 25, Con. 16, Egremont, where they built up a home and raised a large family, during their sojourn of 28 years. Her sons are: John, Wesley, Frank, George and Herbert, the latter on the homestead, the others all in Egremont, near by. Daughters are Lottie, Mrs. McLachlan and Miss Edna, both in Toronto. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. McLachlan, prevented by illness. Besides these chief mourners, six brothers will also mourn: John in B.C.; William in Michigan; George in Montana; Thomas at Dromore; Wesley in Sask.; Richard in the States. Also 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren mourn this mother in Israel.

The funeral on Friday was largely attended by friends and neighbours and beautiful floral offerings spoke of love and respect for the memory of the deceased. These included a pillow from the family, sprays from Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Cross, from Mr. and Mrs. George Love, the McQueens of Durham and others.

Rev. W. J. Burnett of Amos Presbyterian Church spoke comforting words to the bereaved from Romans 8:18 “Four I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us,” and drew lessons also from John, 14th chap. “Let not your heart be troubled,” & Hymns sung were “Nearer my God to Thee,” “Jesus keep me near the Cross” and “Safe in the arms of Jesus,” and before the friends took the last view of the remains, Mr. and Mrs. George Love gave a lovely duet, “Face to Face.”

Mrs. Love was a woman of high Christian character, beloved and respected by all who knew her, and friends and neighbours will long revere her memory. Originally she was a member of the English church, but worshipped with the nearest Protestant body.

Interment took place in Dromore Cemetery, the pall bearers being Messrs. N. A. McQueen, Ainsworth McPhail, Robert Wilson, John Hincks, Thomas Atchison, John McQueen.

The many friends wish to thanks neighbours and many friends for kindness shown to them during their mother’s last illness. Durham Review, Mar. 20, 1924.
