Robert George Samuel Ferguson

(1918 ~ 1990)

 

5.7.6.1. First child of George H. Ferguson and M. May Harbottle, Robert George Samuel Ferguson, was born May 28, 1918, in W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. 

  He married Gwendoline Georgina Polley Crewson, daughter of John Franklin Crewson and Annie Eliza Georgina Bourn, November 16, 1946, in Colbeck, E. Luther Twp., Dufferin Co., Ontario and had four children:

  Robert G. Ferguson died February 22, 1990, aged 71 years, in Walkerton, Ontario, and is interred at Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur, Ontario.   

 

 

----- MARRIAGE -----

Under an arch of cedar, decorated with pink and white streamers with a large bell over head, the marriage of Gwendoline Georgina Polley, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crewson, Colbeck, to Robert George Samuel, son of Mr. George Ferguson and the late Mrs. Ferguson, took place on Saturday, November 16, 1946, at three p.m. The Rev. William Parrot officiated. 

  The bride, given in marriage by her father, looked lovely gowned in a floor length pink sheer with sweetheart neck line. Her headdress was crowned with pink and blue forget-me-nots having a finger tip veil. She carried white baby ‘mums and fern.

  Her sister, Mrs. Albert Hunter, as matron of honor wore a floor length net dress over satin with a headdress of pink and blue flowers and she carried a bouquet of pink carnations and fern. Mr. Albert Hunter, cousin of the groom, was best man.

  The groom’s gift to the bride ws a case of silver, to the matron of honor, a gold bracelet, to the groomsman a pen and pencil set, the pianist a gold pin.

  The bride’s mother received in flowered silk jersey with a corsage of white carnations. She was assisted by Mrs. Roy Hunter dressed in mauve crepe.

 The wedding music was played by Mrs. William Henderson. Following the ceremony Mrs. Albert Hunter sang sweetly, “When Song Is Sweet.”

  About thirty-one guests sat down to a delicious supper served by four friends. The bride’s table was centred with a beautiful decorated four-storey wedding cake.

  Following the supper the happy couple left for Walkerton, Streetsville, Toronto and other points. For traveling the bride chose a green suit with brown accessories. Her top coat was blue with brown trim. They will reside in West Luther. Mount Forest Confederate, Nov. 28, 1946.

Robert G. Ferguson

Robert George Samuel Ferguson, son of the late George Henry Ferguson and the late Martha May Harbottle, died suddenly, February 22, 1990, at Bruce County Hospital, Walkerton, in his 72nd year.

  Dearly loved husband of Gwendoline Crewson; he was the loving father of Shirley, Mrs. Bryan McEwen of Arthur; Lorna Gauthier of Mount Forest; Marilyn, Mrs. Gordon Unruh of Thorold and Laverne at home. Fondly remembered by two granddaughters, Laurie and Chrissy McEwen, and one brother, Melville of Mount Forest.

  Robert, know to his friends as Bob, was born May 28, 1918, on a farm in West Luther Township. He attended S.S. No. 9 school in Arthur Township, later leaving to help his parents at home.

  On November 16, 1946, Robert Ferguson and Gwendoline Crewson were united in marriage by Rev. W. M. Parrot at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crewson of Colbeck. After their honeymoon, the newlyweds took up residence on the family farm in West Luther Township where he has spent his entire life.

  Bob loved music and enjoyed playing the spoons, guitar, violin and harmonica. He also enjoyed listening to Rev. Pickering’s sermons, having people visit him and liked to watch baseball and hockey. Bob was a good friend and neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand.

  The February 24 funeral service was officiated by Rev. Norma Harder at the Goulding Funeral Home, and Mrs. Garry Kerr sang a solo.

  Pallbearers were Donald Ferguson, Donald Shand, Brian Adam, Vernon Graham, Cecil Smith and Bert Seifried.

 Flower bearers were Laurie McEwen, Chrissy McEwen, Margaret Love, Dorothy Harbottle, Elmer Hunter and Howard Walker.

  Interment Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur. Mount Forest Confederate, Apr. 18, 1990.

 

J. Franklin Crewson

August 27, 1891 ~ March 6, 1977

Family and friends were saddened by the passing of John Franklin Crewson at Dufferin Area Hospital, Orangeville, Ontario, Sunday, March 6, 1977 in his 86th year.

 Mr. Crewson is survived by his wife the former Georgina Bourn, one daughter, Gwendoline (Mrs. Robert Ferguson of Conn); eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

   He is predeceased by three daughters, Pauline, Elsie, Muriel (Mrs. Albert Hunter).

  He is also survived by three sisters, Ethel (Mrs. Joseph Hustler, Shelburne); Minnie (Mrs. George Drury, Grand Valley); Isabelle (Mrs. Frederick Gamble, Portage La Prairie, Manitoba). Two brothers, Benjamin of Mildmay and Archibald of Owen Sound.

  He was predeceased by one sister Jennie (Mrs. Frederick Drury); and five brothers, Lorenzo, Harry, George, Bert and Edward.

  Mr. Crewson was born at Gordonville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Crewson (nee McArthur). He moved to Colbeck at an early age where he resided until two years after his marriage, upon which time he moved to Arthur. He farmed there for thirteen years. During these years he served as President of the Agricultural Board; judged and showed horses; served on the church board and was a member of the choir. Moving back to Colbeck he again farmed for several years and was a mail carrier for twenty-four years. Mr. Crewson, eventually retired from the farm to Monticello, where he spent the rest of his remaining years.

  Mr. Crewson rested at Sime’s Funeral Home in Grand Valley where service was conducted by the Rev. Bruce Besley on Tuesday, March 8, 1977 at 5:30 p.m.

  Pallbearers were Albert Barber, William Townsend, Larry Dunn, Lorne Hillis, George Hills, and William White. Flowerbearers were grandchildren, Cecil, David and Jim Hunter; Shirley McEwen, Lorna and Marilyn Ferguson.

  He was always willing to lend a helping hand and will be missed by all. Grand Valley Star & Vidette, Mar. 16, 1977.

 

Annie Eliza Georgina Bourn Crewson

May 5, 1896 ~ July 15, 1995

Entered into rest in Saugeen Valley Nursing Home, Mount Forest on Saturday, July 15, 1995.

  Georgina Crewson (Bourn), in her 100th year; beloved wife of the late Franklin Crewson; dear mother of Gwendoline (Mrs. Ferguson) of Conn; also survived by 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; predeceased by three daughters Pauline, Elsie and Muriel.

  Rested at the Sime’s Funeral Home, Grand Valley until Monday, July 17th where the service was held at 2:00 p.m. Interment Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Monticello United Church or the charity of your choice. Visitation was on Sunday, July 16th, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Grand Valley Star & Vidette, July 19, 1995.

 

M. Oscar Crewson

December 13, 1858 ~ October 20, 1949

There passed to his reward on Thursday, October 20, 1949, one of the oldest and most esteemed residents of the village, in the person of Morgan Oscar Crewson. He was the second oldest person living in the village, being in his 91st year.

  The late Mr. Crewson was born at Everton, Ont., on December 13, 1858, the eldest son of a family of 15 children born to Lorenzo and Hannah Crewson, five of whom are still living. They are Thomas, of Shelburne; Mrs. Minnie Harvey, Toronto; Mrs. Annie Dun-field, Carberry; Mrs. Nettie Riddols, Listowel; Miss Etta Crewson, Vancouver.

 On April 19, 1882, he was married to Annie McArthur, of Grand Valley who pre-deceased him on June 13, 1940. They began their married life at Crewson’s Corners, where the township line between Eramosa and Erin abuts that of Massagaweya, from whence they moved to Dufferin County entering into extensive farming and stock raising. They retired to Grand Valley twenty-one years ago.  To this union were born 12 children of which three sons predeceased him. Those surviving are: Mrs. Jennie Drury, Guelph; Mrs. Ethel Hustler, Grand Valley; Lorenzo Crewson, Conn; Mrs. Minnie Drury, Grand Valley; Mrs. Isobel Gamble, Carberry, Man.; Frank Crewson, Monticello; Ed. Crewson, Arthur; Ben Crewson, Owen Sound; Archie Crewson, Owen Sound.

  Mr. Crewson was an active gardener and he had been awarded numerous prizes for exhibits at this year’s Fall Fair.

 Public funeral service was conducted by Rev. Charlton in the Church of Christ (Disciples), Grand Valley, at 2:30 o’clock, on Saturday, October 22nd, following a private service at his late home, Ponsford Street, at 2:00 o’clock. The large congregation in attendance showed the esteem in which Mr. Crewson was held. Interment was made in Union Cemetery, Grand Valley.

  The flowerbearers were: Gwendolyn Ferguson, Muriel Hunter, Evelyn Curtis, Howard McArthur, Grace Eccles, Clarence Crewson.

  The pallbearers were: Coram Hustler, Charles Drury, Oscar Drury, Arthur Hustler, Murray Crewson, Morris Crewson.

  The many and beautiful floral tributes were from: Lorenzo, Frank, Ethel and Minnie Crewson; Jennie Drury and family; Mrs. C. McArthur, Minnie, Lizzie and Howard; Grandchildren; Miss Ethel Simpson; Coram Hustler and family; Arthur Hustler and family; The Church of Christ (Disciples); Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Crewson and family; Nettie Riddols and family; Etta Crewson and Annie Dunfield; The Neighbors; Mr. and Mrs. Charlton; Mrs. Cyril Hudson and family; The Watt family.
