Thomas White

February 19, 1848 ~ October 27, 1909

CALEDON PIONEER PASSES AWAY –

THOMAS WHITE, ONE OF THE EARLY SETTLERS,

GOES TO HIS REWARD – A LARGE FUNERAL

One of the oldest residents of this section of the country passed away on Friday, October 27, 1909 in the person of Thomas White of Caledon, who reached the advanced age of 83 years. A week before his death Mr. White was removed to the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Maxwell of Lot 27, 1st Line West, Caledon, where all that loving friends could do for him was done, but to no effect. Until a little over a year ago Mr. White was in his usual health, but advancing years left their mark and he did not come to town as often as he used to.

OF HARDY STOCK

The late Mr. White was a native of Monaghan, Ireland, and left the Emerald Isle when he was about 26 years of age, just two years after he was married. He took up his residence in the United States, but remained there only a couple of years, when he emigrated to Canada and settled on the farm where he spent all his life, Lot 28, townline Mono and Caledon, on the latter side. At that time the country was all bush and Mr. White started in to hew out a home for himself and a little family. He passed all through the pioneer stage and by hard work and the usual early struggles eventually had one of the best farms in the township of Caledon. Deceased was a man of strong convictions and was never afraid to express his opinions. If he was your friend he always could be relied on to do you a good turn if needed and many old friends will regret to learn of his demise. In politics Mr. White was a Conservative and in religion was an Anglican. He was a faithful member of the Orange order and for many years was an honorary member of L.O.L. No. 635, Orangeville. The funeral took place from the residence of his daughter. Mrs. Maxwell, on Sunday afternoon and was under the auspices of the Orange order. Rev. G. A. Rix conducted religious services at the house and grave. It was one of the largest attended funerals that has been seen in this community in many years, about eighty conveyances being in the procession, which testified the high esteem in which deceased was held. Interment was at the Forest Lawn cemetery and the bearers were Messrs. E. J. Ellis, G. A. Cobean, H. A. Duke, R. J. Hughes, J. M. Deagle and B. McGuire. Henry White of Mono is the only surviving brother. To the widow and grown-up family who survive. The Sun, in common with a large number of friends, extends its heartfelt sympathy. Orangeville Sun, August 26, 1909.

Ann Elizabeth Wardell White

July 6, 1859 ~ October 29, 1928

Elizabeth Wardell, widow of the late Thomas White, who died at her home, Lot 11, Con. 8, Melancthon, on Monday, October 29, 1928 in her 69th year, was born in Egremont Township, in 1859, moving with her parents to Melancthon Township in 1871. In 1879 she was married to Thomas White, who predeceased her nineteen years ago. She was a member of Gandier Presbyterian (now United) Church. She was a loving mother and a good neighbor. Being one of the early settlers, she knew what pioneer life was like. She was ever ready with a willing hand or to befriend the traveler in those days. Though an invalid for some time latterly, she was always bright and cheerful. Three sons and three daughters survive: John, Fergus; Harold, Proton; Fred, Melancthon; Mrs. Rebecca Hume, Amaranth; Mrs. James Legate, South Luther; Louisa, at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: John Wardell, Walford; George Shelburne; Isaac, Thessalon; Mrs. Jennie Smith, Spanish; Mrs. Benj. Keast, East Luther. The funeral took place to Shelburne Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 31st, following service in Gandier United Church, Keldon. The pallbearers were Messrs. Archie McDougall, John Davidson, Rufus Martin, Marvin Watts, Frank Lyon, Frank Brown. The floral tributes consisted of a wreath from the family, and wreaths and sprays from friends. Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey, Thistletown; Mrs. Mary White and son George, Woodbridge; Mrs. Jane Kaiser and son Carl, Mrs. Irwin Crawford and Mrs. Percy Kaiser, of Toronto; Angus Green, Metz; Mr. Spence and Mrs. John White, Fergus; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Campbell, South Luther; Mrs. Elizabeth McGirr, Durham.
