Erwin Louis Ferguson  (1898 ~ 1970)

 

5.7.9. Ninth child of Sarah Adams and Samuel Ferguson, Erwin Louis Ferguson, was born July 25, 1898, W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. 

  He married Margaret Amy Mildred Ellis, daughter of Frederick Ellis and Margaret Riddell Newbigging, June 26, 1918, Proton Twp., Grey Co., Ontario and had four children:  

 

 

  Erwin L. Ferguson died September 28, 1970, aged 72 years in Mount Forest, Ontario and M. A. Mildred Ellis Ferguson Graham died October 21, 1978, aged 77 years in Kitchener, Ontario, and are interred at Mount Forest Cemetery.

50th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Ferguson, Main Street North, observed their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, June 22, 1968. Open house was held at their residence afternoon and evening when the happy couple received about one hundred and fifty friends, neighbors and relatives.

  A family dinner was served at the Mount Royal Hotel where the table was centred with gold candles and the three-story wedding cake made by the bride of fifty years and her daughter and decorated by a niece, Mrs. Wray Moore, Conn.

  Mrs. Ferguson is the former Mildred Ellis, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ellis, Proton Township, and Mr. Ferguson is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ferguson, Luther Township. They were married at the bride’s home on June 26, 1918. They have one son, Harold Ferguson, Hamilton, and one daughter, Velma, Mrs. Carmen Dickson, Orchard. One son, Louis, is deceased. They have eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

  The family presented their parents with a corsage and boutonnière and a fiftieth anniversary tea service. They also received many flowers, cards and gifts also telegrams from Marvin Howe and Robert Stanfield.

  Guests were present from Toronto, Hamilton, Scotland, Ont., Collingwood, Grand Valley, Listowel, Durham, Fergus and surrounding district. Mount Forest Confederate, June 27, 1968.

Erwin L. Ferguson

Erwin L. Ferguson, a resident of Mount Forest for the past twenty-two years, passed away in Louise Marshall Hospital on Monday, September 28, 1970, after a lengthy illness. He was in his 73rd year.

  Mr. Ferguson was born in Luther Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ferguson. He farmed in Proton Township for many years before coming to Mount Forest. He was a member of Mount Forest United Church.

  Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred Ellis, to whom he was married in 1918; one son, Harold, Hamilton; and one daughter, Velma, Mrs. Carman Dickson, Orchard; also eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two brothers, George, Mount Forest; and Leonard, Collingwood. He was predeceased by one son, Louis, in 1958; and by four sisters, Minnie, Mrs. James Hunter; Maggie, Mrs. Robert McFarlane; Lillie, Mrs. Fred Gear; and Ida, Mrs. John Smith; and three brothers, Talbert, Robert and Dave.

  The funeral was held from the Hendrick Funeral Chapel on Thursday, October 1, 1970, and was in charge of the Rev. George Wright and Dr. A. F. Lavender. Interment was in Mount Forest Cemetery.

  The flowers were carried by four grandsons, Wayne, Barry and Beverly Ferguson and Bryan Dickson, and Harry Snyders and Leonard Seifried. Mount Forest Confederate, Oct. 15, 1970.

 

M. A. Mildred Ellis Ferguson Graham

December 4, 1900 ~ October 21, 1978

On October 21, 1978, Mrs. Alex Graham passed away in Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in Kitchener.

  The former Margaret Amy Mildred Ellis, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ellis, was born in Proton Township on December 4, 1900. On June 26, 1918 she married Erwin Ferguson who passed away in September, 1970.

  On December 23, 1971 she married Alex Graham. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Velma (Mrs. Carmen Dickson) Normanby Township and one son, Harold of Blyth; four step-daughters, Verna (Mrs. Norris Bruce) Orangeville; Norma (Mrs. Carson Rae) Georgetown; Elda (Mrs. Stuart Stockdale) Peterborough; and Elaine (Mrs. Joseph Robinson) Monck; also 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

  Also surviving are one sister, Ruth Ann (Mrs. Cecil Hiles) Scotland, Ontario and one brother Fred, Port Elgin.

  She was predeceased by one son, Louis and one sister and one brother.

  She was a member of Mount Forest United Church. The funeral was held at Hendrick Funeral Chapel on October 23, 1978 and conducted by her minister, Rev. Allan McDowell. Interment was in Mount Forest Cemetey.

  The pallbearers were Bryan Dickson, Wayne, Barry and Beverly Ferguson, Ross Bruce and Ralph Stockdale. Flower bearers were Bradley Ferguson, Gayle Dickson, Evelyn and Susan Robinson, Sherry Dickson, Lynette Weber, Dianne Dinning and Barbara Stockdale. Mount Forest Confederate, Nov. 1, 1978.

 

Frederick Ellis

May 6, 1862 ~ June 3, 1950

Death came suddenly to Mr. Frederick Ellis on Sunday evening, June 3, 1950, at the home of his son, Andrew, Con. 3, Lot 12, Proton Tp. Although in frail health for a number of years with a heart condition which caused acute suffering and anxiety at times, he was seriously ill for only two days, when he developed pneumonia and passed peacefully away.

  Mr. Ellis was born on the 16th Concession of Egremont, May 6, 1862. He was the fourth youngest son of a family of twelve, six boys and six girls, of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis.

  At the age of eighteen he went to work at Britton in Alma Tp. In 1885 he was married to Margaret Newbigging, of Alma Tp. They settled in Neustadt, where he was employed as foreman of the flax mill for four years. In March, 1880, he bought the farm on the 2nd Concession of Proton, where he resided until his death. His wife predeceased him on April 11, 1932.

  Of a kind and cheerful disposition, ever ready to give a helping hand, the deceased had won the esteem of a large circle of friends. He helped to build Morrison Church at Cedarville, which he attended faithfully as long as health permitted.

   Left to mourn his loss are two sons and two daughters, Andrew, on the home place; Mildred, Mrs. Erwin Ferguson, Mount Forest; Ruth, Mrs. Cecil Hiles, Scotland; and Fred, Bridgeport; seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Jordon, of Holstein, and Julia, in Minnesota, U.S.A., also survive. A daughter, Grace, Mrs. A. McEachern, predeceased him in 1940.

  The funeral which was very largely attended, was held at the home, where service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Ernest Hayes, of Cedarville United Church, with interment in Mount Forest Cemetery.

  The pallbearers were Harold Kilpatrick, Reg. Wiltshire, Bert Ferrier, Neil Keith, Jas. Doyle, Wm. Howells.

  Floral tributes were carried by his seven grandsons, Fred, John and Donald McEachern, Louie and Harold Ferguson, George Ellis and Wayne Hiles.

  Friends were present from Ingersoll, Holstein, Listowel, Toronto and Smithville. Mount Forest Confederate, June 22, 1950.

 

Margaret R. Newbiggin Ellis

November 19, 1863 ~ April 11, 1932

The death occurred on Monday, April 11, 1932, at her home in Proton Twp., of a well known resident in the person of Mrs. Fred Ellis, who succumbed to pneumonia after a week’s illness. She was in her 69th year.

  Surviving are her husband, two sons and three daughters: Andrew and Fred, at home; Mrs. Archie McEachern and Mrs. E. Ferguson, Cedarville, and Mrs. Cecil Hiles, Scotland, Ont.

  The family have been respected residents of Proton Township for the past forty years.

  The funeral took place on Wednesday, Rev. Mr. Crighton, of Conn, conducting the service. Interment was made in Mount Forest Cemetery. Mount Forest Confederate, Apr. 21, 1932.

 

John Ellis

April 2, 1819 ~ December 27, 1899

Death came suddenly on Wednesday evening, December 27, 1899, of last week to John Ellis, of Egremont. He was visiting his brother, Charles Ellis, of Aberfoyle, near Guelph, and was sitting in a chair reading a paper when he suddenly dropped over and became unconscious. Medical aid was at once summoned, but before it reached the house he had expired. The deceased was about eighty-one years of age, and leaves a family, all of whom are grown up. His wife died a few months ago. The remains were taken to Mount Forest Friday for burial, and the funeral took place on Saturday from the residence of his son-in-law, I. F. Doyle, Sligo Road, to Holstein Cemetery. The following are the surviving members of the family: Mrs. Isaac Doyle, and Theodore Ellis, Sligo Road, Egremont; Mrs. Robert Kerr, Holstein; Mrs. Martell, John Ellis, Fred Ellis, Joseph Ellis, Mrs. George Sageman, Proton; Miss Mary Ann Ellis, Puslinch; Mrs. Cuff, Minnesota; Mrs. Gehl, Sault Ste. Marie. Mount Forest Confederate, Jan. 4, 1900.

 

Mary Ann Hoffman Ellis

February 16, 1830 ~ October 5, 1899

Mrs. John Ellis, of Egremont, died on Thursday last, October 5, 1899 at her home on the sixteenth concession after a very short illness. She had been sick last winter and had never fully gained her previous strength but she was still able to be about and to do her own work. On the Friday before her death she went over to the farm of her brother-in-law, Richard Ellis, to assist in picking potatoes. The day was very cold and it is thought the chilling she received must have produced the illness which finally ended in inflammation and caused her death. The funeral took place on Saturday to Reid’s Cemetery, baseline of Egremont, the services being conducted by Rev. J. M. Miller, Presbyterian minister, of Holstein. The maiden name of deceased was Mary Ann Hoffman, and she was born in Germany sixthy-eight years and eight months ago. Her parents never came to this country but while still very young she and a sister crossed the ocean and braved the difficulties of this new continent. Over fifty years ago she was married to John Ellis and in May last they celebrated their golden wedding. The lived for a time in Waterloo county but afterwards removed to this district. One child is dead but the following survive: Mrs. Isaac Doyle, and Theodore Ellis, Sligo Road, Egremont; Mrs. Robert Kerr, Holstein; Mrs. Martell, John Ellis, Fred Ellis, Joseph Ellis, Mrs. George Sageman, Proton; Miss Mary Ann Ellis, Puslinch; Mrs. Cuff, Minnesota; Mrs. Gehl, Sault Ste. Marie. All were present at the funeral except the two last, who were too far away, and Mrs. Sageman, who was ill and unable to be present. Mrs. Ellis also leaves two sisters who reside in Buffalo.
