James Adams  (1858 ~ 1922)

 

5.8. Eighth child of Robert Adams and Jane Patterson, James Adams, was born September 17, 1858, in Clarke Twp., Durham Co., Ontario.

  He married Dinah Isabella Perry, daughter of John Thomas Perry and Catherine Wilkie, December 22, 1885, in W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario and had ten children:

 

 

  James Adams died March 3, 1922, aged 63 years in W. Luther Twp., Ontario and Dinah I. Perry Adams died May 9, 1951, aged 83 years in Proton Twp., Grey Co., Ontario and are interred at Mount Forest Cemetery.

James Adams

September 17, 1858 ~ March 3, 1922

On Friday morning, March 3, 1922, there passed away at his home on the 12th Conc., of Luther, James Adams, a highly esteemed resident of this vicinity. Death came very unexpectedly and was a great shock to the family and community at large. Deceased retired apparently in the best of health and during the night was seized with a severe attack of acute indigestion, expiring before morning.

  The late Mr. Adams was born in the township of Clarke, county of Durham, in the year 1858. When a young man he came to Luther Tp. and in 1885 married Dinah Isobel Perry, daughter of the late John T. Perry, of Luther Tp. settling on the present homestead.

  He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, five sons and four daughters: Martha, Mrs. W. G. Samuel, West Luther; Cassie, Mrs. Andrew Morrison, Proton; Gertie, Mrs. Stanley Herriot, Arthur; Will of Proton; George of Arthur; Robert of Luther; Stanley, Edwin and Florence at home; also three brothers, John, Thomas and William R., of Durham county and one sister, Mrs. Isabella Johnston, of Midland.

 The funeral on Monday afternoon was largely attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. A. H. McLean, of Conn Presbyterian Church. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. Robt. Calder, James H. Officer, Robt. Jackson, Jas. Bradshaw, W. W. Duncan and E. C. Robson. Mount Forest Confederate, Mar. 9, 1922.

 

Dinah I. Perry Adams

December 23, 1868 ~ May 9, 1951

On Wednesday evening, May 9, 1951, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Andrew C. Morrison, Conc. 2, Proton, there passed away an old and highly respected citizen of Conn district, Mrs. Dinah Isabella Adams. She was the eldest daughter of the late John T. Perry and Catherine Wilkie. Born nearly 84 years ago on Lot 4, Conc. 13, W. Luther, in 1885 she married James Adams and they cleared and built on Lot 1, Conc. 12 where she resided until her death. Their home was burned in 1903 and they rebuilt. After the death of her husband in March 1922, she made her home with her son, Stanley, who now owns the farm. Three sons also predeceased her.

  A fall last September dislocated both shoulders and she was bedfast for several weeks but had fully recovered. With her eldest daughter, Martha, Mrs. Samuel, who has tenderly cared for her since September, she went to visit at Morrison’s on Monday, April 30, 1951, from where they visited the home of her late son, William, the following Thursday, and had intended going to Graham’s the next week. She hoped to make further visits and planned to go to Toronto later to visit her sister, Kate, who is not in good health.

  On Sunday, May 6th she was in her usual strength and good spirits, and enjoyed having several visitors, including four of her 13 great grandchildren, all of whom she particularly loved but Monday morning she did not feel well and the doctor was called and found her weakening. She steadily became worse until Wednesday evening when she passed quietly and peacefully away to her reward.

  She was greatly loved by all who knew her, to many of whom she had often proved a friend indeed.

  To mourn the loss of a loving mother and grandmother, she leaves her family, Martha, Mrs. W. G. Samuel; Cassie, Mrs. A. C. Morrison; George; Gertie, Mrs. Stanley Herriot; Stanley; Edwin and Florence, Mrs. Alex Graham; 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, also five sisters, Kate, Mrs. Hay and Maude, Mrs. Standeaven, both of Toronto; Bertha, Mrs. Hugh McDonald, Innisfree, Alta.; Mae, Mrs. Alan Butler, Clifford and Mabel, Mrs. Rus. Magee, London, and four brothers, Emery and Stanley, London; Dan, of Kelowna, B.C., and Finlay of Buffalo, N.Y.

  The funeral was held on Saturday, May 12th, from her late home, that of her son, Stanley, where a private service was held, thence to Knox Presbyterian Church, Conn, of which she had been a long-life member, with her minister, Rev. M. McNabb officiating. The choir sang Good Night and Good Morning. Friends were present from Clifford, London, Buffalo, Toronto, Midland, Orono, Roseneath, Hampton, Bowmanville, Fergus, Ennotville, Rothsay, Palmerston, Holstein, Tavistock and Brampton.

The many beautiful floral tributes were carred by her seven grandsons and three of her granddaughters, namely Perry Samuel, Alvin, Jack, Clifford, Gordon and Bobby Adams and Clarence Morrison, Gladys Adams, Winona Herriot and Elda (Graham) Stockdale.

  Pallbearers were Talbert and George Ferguson, Tom Smith, Norman Moore, Wes. Small and Archie Officer. Interment was made in family plot in Mount Forest Cemetery. Mount Forest Confederate, May 24, 1951.
