Martha Ellen Adams (1886 ~ 1956)
5.8.1. First child of James Adams and Dinah Perry, Martha Ellen Adams, was born July 7, 1886, in W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario.
She married Walter George Samuel, son of Walter Samuel and Mary Gilchrist, February 27, 1907, W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario and had two children:

Martha E. Adams Samuel died September 6, 1956, aged 70 years and Walter G. Samuel died February 13, 1933, aged 58 years in Mount Forest, W. Luther Twp., Ontario, and are interred at Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur, Ontario.

Martha E. Adams Samuel
July 7, 1886 ~ September 6, 1956
Mrs. Martha Samuel, beloved wife of the late Walter Samuel, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 1956, in Louise Marshall Hospital, Mount Forest, as a result of a stroke suffered two weeks previously.
Mrs. Samuel was born July 7, 1886, on Con. 12, West Luther, eldest daughter of the late James Adams and Dinah Perry Adams.
Her early life was spent in West Luther. On February 27, 1907, she married Walter Samuel and went to live on Con. 9, later moving to the farm on Con. 8, now owned by her son, Allan. Here her husband predeceased her in 1933. Shortly after his death she left the farm and spent the rest of her life carring for others in Mount Forest, Arthur and Holstein. Her kind smile will long be remembered by all who knew her. She was a member of Conn Presbyterian Church.
Left to mourn her loss are one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Alvin McLean, Mount Forest; one son, Allan, West Luther; two grandchildren, Carl and Alvena McLean; two great grandchildren, Danny and Douglas McLean, three brothers, George Adams, Mount Forest, Stanley and Ed Adams, West Luther, and three sisters, Cassie, Mrs. Andrew Morrison, Mount, Gertie, Mrs. Stanley Herriot, Mount Forest, and Florence, Mrs. Alex Graham, West Luther.
The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on Saturday, September 8, from Goulding’s Funeral Home, and was conducted by Rev. Ralph Humphries of Mount Forest Baptist Church and Mr. Peter Walter of Conn Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur.
The pall bearers were nephews, Art Ternan, Keith Samuel, Cliff Adams, Clarence Morrison, Alvin Adams and Bob Adams.
The many beautiful floral tributes were born by nieces and nephews and John Barnard of Holstein.
Friends from Midland, Hampton, Bowmanville, Toronto, Holstein, Mount Forest, Dundalk, and the surrounding district attended the funeral. Mount Forest Confederate, Sept. 27, 1956.
Walter G. Samuel
December 2, 1874 ~ February 13, 1933
The funeral of the late Walter Samuel, a life-long and respected resident of West Luther, took place on February 15, 1933, from his late residence to Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur. The Rev. Robert Drinnan, of Damascus and the Rev. W. H. Chambers of Monck, conducted the services. The pallbearers were Messrs. Elgin Waters, John Tone, J. M. McRobb, Robert Wilkie, Chas. Howes and L. Goulding.
The family were all present but David who resides in the West. The large attendance was tangible evidence of the regret felt at parting with such a worthy citizen and estimable neighbour and friend.
To mourn his death there survive his wife; Perry, at home, and one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Alvin McLean), West Luther; also his mother, three sisters and five brothers: Jennie (Mrs. Geo. Ternan); Nellie (Mrs. Hugh Saunders); Annie (Mrs. Matthew Tone); Harold and James, all of West Luther; William and Allen, Niagara Falls, and David in the West. Mount Forest Confederate, Feb. 22, 1933.
Walter Samuel

Mary Gilchrist Samuel
March 21, 1851 ~ March 23, 1935
One of West Luther’s highly respected women was removed by death when Mary Gilchrist, relict of the late Walter Samuel, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 1935, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Matthew Tone. Her eighty-fourth birthday occurred two days before her death.
The funeral took place from the home of her daughter on Monday and was largely attended. The services were in charge of Rev. Ewen McEwen assisted by Rev. Mr. Chambers of Monck. Those who acted as pallbearers were four grandsons, Arthur and William Ternan, Allan Samuel, Billie Ternan and husbands of two granddaughters, Albert Barber and George McLean.
The deceased was a native of Hastings County, where she grew up. After her marriage to Walter Samuel, fifty-three years ago, she came to West Luther where the remainder of her life was spent. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel settled on a bush farm on Concession 8 which they transformed into a fine agricultural property. She was a woman of fine character, a devoted wife and mother and an excellent neighbour.
Mr. Samuel predeceased his wife thirty-three years ago. Five sons and three daughters survive, William, Niagara Falls, N.Y., James, West Luther; David, Goodwater, Sask., Harold, West Luther; Allan, Niagara Falls; Mrs. George Ternan, Mrs. Matthew Tone and Mrs. Hugh Saunders of West Luther. The oldest son, Walter predeceased her. Seventeen grand-children and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mount Forest Confederate, Apr. 4, 1935.
