S. Elizabeth O’Neill Adams
April 29, 1931 ~ February 26, 2021
Sarah (Betty) Elizabeth Adams (nee O’Neill) 89, died February 26, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Villa, Dundas Ontario with family at her side. She was born April 29, 1931, to John Thomas and Sarah Ann (nee O’Dwyer) O’Neill in Jonquiere, Quebec. Betty brightened every room she entered and every conversation she was part of with her winning smile and cheerful attitude. She has gone to meet the love of her life, childhood sweetheart, Gordon Adams who she met in Welland Ontario where both of their families had moved to in the early 1940’s. Gordon and Betty eloped on Christmas Eve 1949 and spent the next 64 plus years of their lives devoted to each other. They built their home and raised their daughters in St. Catharines. While Gordon made wooden furniture and toys in their basement Betty was busy painting them. Betty was introduced to wilderness camping by Gordon as a young bride. They spent years enjoying campfires with friends as they moved up in the camping world to an RV that they travelled through much of North America in. Betty still talked of their days as part of the Dunlop Seniors and their “gang” that met for coffee, breakfast and numerous parties. Mom had few regrets, the major one being that her grandchildren lived so far away. Nothing was too difficult for Grandma Betty to do for her five grandsons when they saw each other, whether it was building castles from cardboard boxes, reading one more story or---, During this pandemic, she relished Face Time and “window visits” from her grandsons and great-grandsons. Photos and videos of her youngest great-grandson who she never got to meet in person due to Covid, were a major joy and highlight in her last month. Betty is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Fay and Jim Mansfield of Waterdown, ON; Gail and Rick Impey of Edmonton Alberta; grandsons Gregory, Scott and Glen Stilges of Edmonton; Gordon and Colin (Justine) Mansfield of Toronto, Great Grandsons Warren and Riley Mansfield of Toronto; brother Leo (Theresa) O’Neill; sisters-in-law, Betty and Lise O’Neill and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by husband Gordon Adams; son-in-law Stephen Stilges; brothers and sisters-in-law Ned (Pauline), Tom (Lucy), Patrick (Jeanine), John (Lucile) O’Neill; brothers Jerry and Daniel O’Neill; sister Veronica MacDonald and sister and brother-in-law Georgina (Don) Brauweiller. Cremation has taken place and interment will be a private affair. A Celebration of Life will be organized for a later date when family and friends can safely gather again. Messages of condolence may be made at the following passfieldmortuary@gmail.com. In lieu of flowers contributions to St. Joseph’s Villa, Long Term Care, 56 Govenors Rd., Dundas would be appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Joe’s for their compassion and the care over the past three years. Betty was very happy with the care and activities that kept her active, engaged and safe during the past year when visits were so limited. St. Catharines Standard, Apr. 29, 2021.
