Gertrude Isabella Adams  (1897 ~ 1971)

 

5.8.6. Sixth child of James Adams and Dinah Isabella Perry, Gertrude Isabella Adams, was born May 3, 1897, W. Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. 

  She married John Andrew Stanley Herriot, son of David Herriot and Barbara Herriot, April 25, 1917, Conn, W. Luther Twp., Ontario and had one child:  

 

 

  Gertrude I. Adams Herriot died May 12, 1971, aged 74 years and J. A. Stanley Herriot died August 21, 1967, aged 76 years in Guelph, Ontario, and is interred at Mount Forest Cemetery.

Gertrude I. Adams Herriot

Mrs. Stanley Herriot passed away following a lengthy illness at the Hyde Park Nursing Home, Guelph, on Wednesday, May 12, 1971 in her 75th year.

  Born in West Luther Township, she was the former Gertrude Adams, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Adams. She and her husband, who passed away four years ago, farmed in West Luther before retiring to Mount Forest in 1947. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a former choir member.

  Surviving are one daughter, Winona, Mrs. Earl Page of Woodstock; three brothers, George, Stanley and Edwin all of Mount Forest, and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Martha, Mrs. Walter Samuel; Cassie, Mrs. Andrew Morrison; and Florence, Mrs. Alex Graham, all of Mount Forest; Robert, Detroit, Mich.; and William, Cedarville.

  The funeral was held from Hendrick Funeral Home, Mount Forest, on Saturday, May 15, 1971, and was in charge of the Rev. Patrick G. D. Kerr. Interment was in Mount Forest Cemetery.

  The pallbearers were Alvin Adams, Clifford Adams, Clarence Morrison, Allan Jones, Norris Bruce and Peter Moorhead.

  Flowers were carried by Karen Page, Danny Page, Billy Adams and Philip Moorhead.

  Friends and relatives from a distance attending the funeral were from Bowmanville, Toronto, Orangeville, Etobicoke, Willowdale, Fergus, Peterborough, Grand Valley, Hanover and Waterloo. Mount Forest Confederate, May 27, 1971.

 

J. A. Stanley Herriot

May 5, 1891 ~ August 21, 1967

John Andrew Stanley Herriot, 76, passed away in Guelph General Hospital on Monday, August 21, 1967, after a six-week illness. He had been a patient in Louise Marshall Hospital for six weeks and was removed to Guelph two days before his death.

  Mr. Herriot was born in West Luther Township and farmed in the Conn district until he moved to Mount Forest in 1947. He was employed at Brandon Caskets until his retirement in 1965.

  He is survived by his wife, the former Gertrude Isobel Adams, who is a patient in the Baker Nursing Home; one daughter, Winona, Mrs. Earl Page, Woodstock; two grandchildren; two brothers, W. D. Herriot and James Herriot, both of Mount Forest.

  The funeral was held from the Gardiner Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, August 23, and was in charge of the Rev. F. A. Pickering. Interment was in Mount Forest Cemetery.

  The pallbearers were Messrs. Jack McEachern, Bernard Shaughnessy, Cecil Herriot, Allan Jones, Clifford Adams and Clarence Morrison. Mount Forest Confederate, Sept. 7, 1967.

 

David Herriot

January 5, 1852 ~ June 2, 1931

On Tuesday morning, June 2, 1931, there passed away at his home in Conn, another old and highly respected resident in the person of David Herriot. Although having been in failing health for some time, he was only confined to his bed for a couple of weeks.

  Deceased was born in “Muddy York” now Toronto, in January, 1852, coming with his parents, when eight years of age, to Lot 9, Con. 14, West Luther, where he resided until fifty years ago, when he married Barbara Herriot, and settled on Lot 8, Con. 12, West Luther, where he farmed until retiring to Conn 15 years ago.

  His wife having predeceased him eight years ago, he leaves to mourn his loss one daughter and three sons: Barbara, Mrs. Jones, of Mt. View; David, of West Luther; James H., on the homestead, and Stanley, of Arthur Township; also four sisters and one brother: Mrs. James Clarke, of Gorrie; Mrs. Henry Arnott, of Conn; Mrs. William Brown, Egremont; Mrs. W. S. Carter,  of Spy Hill, Sask., and James of West Luther.

  The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on Thursday, June 4, 1931, from the Knox Presbyterian Church, Conn. The services were conducted by his pastor, Mr. John Fraser, and interment took place in the Mount Forest Cemetery. The pall-bearers were his four nephews and two grandsons, Will and James Arnott, Robert and David Brown, Allen and Norman Jones. The flower bearers were Harry and Cecil Arnott, Ivan Alexander and Clarence Ridsdale. Mount Forest Confederate, June 11, 1931.

 

Barbara Herriot

February 17, 1851 ~ February 15, 1923

There died in the Mount Forest General Hospital on Thursday [February 15, 1923] evening last, Barbara Herriot, wife of Mr. David Herriot, of Conn.

  Mrs. Herriot has been in ill-health all winter, but had been in the hospital only a few days. She was born in Scotland 73 years ago, and came when quite young to Canada with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Herriot who settled on the 2nd concession of Arthur. She was a fine type of woman a good neighbour and held in high esteem by all.

  She leaves to mourn her loss her husband; three sons: James H. and William D., of West Luther, and Stanley of Arthur Township; and one daughter, Mrs. William Jones, of West Luther.

  The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon. Service was held in Westminster Church here conducted by the Rev. Dr. MacRae.  Interment took place in Mount Forest Cemetery. Mount Forest Confederate, Feb. 22, 1923.

 

David Herriot

November 3, 1824 ~ February 26, 1916

One of the most respected pioneers of West Luther passed away on Saturday evening in the person of Mr. David Herriot, Sr., in his 93rd year. Death was due to the infirmities of extreme old age. He had been bedfast for a year and a half, but till just recently had been quiet bright mentally. He was born in East Lothian, Scotland on November 3, 1824. In 1849 he married Janet Henderson and came to Canada, followed by his bride the next year, and they made their home in Toronto. For the next ten years he was employed as foreman and otherwise on several public works. In 1860 they came to West Luther and settled on the south half of Lot 9, Con. 14, and encountered all the privations and hard work of pioneer life. Mrs. Herriot died on April 29, last in her 92nd year so that both died nonagenarians, having enjoyed the unusually long period of 66 years of married life. There survive four daughters and three sons: Ellen, Mrs. James Clarke, Gorrie; Mary, Mrs. Henry Arnott, West Luther, her husband being deceased over 30 years; Jessie, Mrs. William Brown, Egremont; Margaret, Mrs. William Selby Carter, Spy Hill, Sask.; David, West Luther, and George and James on the homestead. Two children died in infancy before they came to Luther. Deceased was a member of the North Luther Presbyterian church. He was a Liberal in politics and was a constant reader of The Globe for many years and of the Confederate even since it started. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to the Mount Forest Cemetery and was largely attended, the services being conducted by his pastor, the Rev. S. H. Moyer. The pall bearers were five grandsons: Messrs. William D., James H., and John Herriot, William and James Arnott, and Mr. William Nixon, husband of a granddaughter. Mount Forest Confederate, Mar. 2, 1916.

 

Janet Henderson Herriot

April 8, 1824 ~ April 29, 1916

The death of Mrs. David Herriot, Sr., which took place on Thursday last, April 29, 1915 removed one of the most aged and most respected pioneers of West Luther. The deceased, whose maiden name was Janet Henderson, was born in East Lothian, Scotland, on April 8, 1824, so that at the time of her decease she had entered her 92nd year. She had been in rather poor health for some time but was severely ill with bronchitis for less than a week previous to death. She was married in Scotland in 1849 in which year her husband came to Canada. She came out in the following year, and they made their home in Toronto. During the next ten years Mr. Herriot was engaged as foreman and otherwise on several public works.

  In 1860 they decided to come to what was then the wilds of Luther, and settled on the south half of Lot 9, Con. 14, and experienced all the hardships of the pioneers. Mr. Herriot still survives and is a few months older then his wife. There also survive four daughters and three sons: Ellen, Mrs. James Clarke, Gorrie; Mary, Mrs. Henry Arnott, West Luther, her husband being deceased 30 years ago; Jessie, Mrs. William Brown, Egremont; Margaret, Mrs. Wm. Selby Carter, Spy Hill, Sask.; David, West Luther, and George and James on the homestead.  Two children died in infancy before they came to Luther. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon. Rev. S. H. Moyer conducted the services, deceased being a member of the North Luther Presbyterian Church, Conn. The pallbearers were Messrs. E. C. Robson, David Alexander, Sr., Samuel Small, Robert Hunter, R. E. Hunter, and James Clarke. Interment took place in the Mount Forest Cemetery and there was a large attendance.  Mount Forest Confederate, May 6, 1915.
