He was a member of Morrison United Church, Cedarville, and the work of the Bible Society was of particular interest to him. For 24 years he was treasurer of the Cedarville branch. He was also a board member of S.S. No. 9.

At the death of his wife, the former Ellen Wilkie in 1927 he was left with the care of a young family. Also predeceasing him were two infant children, two grandchildren and one brother, William.

Sarah E. Wilkie Funston

July 18, 1888 ~ March 16, 1927

The subject of this sketch, whose maiden name was Sarah Ellen Wilkie, was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Wilkie, and was born on July 18, 1888, at their home on the sixth concession of Egremont, where she lived until February 10, 1909, when she was united in marriage to Mr. Rufus A. Funston. After their marriage they lived for a short time on the second concession of Proton with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Funston, afterwards settling on thie adjoining farm on the 4th Con. of Proton, where they made a beautiful up-to-date home, and where they resided happily until her death, which took place after a short illness.

Deceased was in her usual health until Sunday, March 6, when she complained of not feeling well. Medical aid was summoned and it was found that she had contracted a severe attack of pleurisy, and in spite of all that medical skill, nursing, and kind and loving care could do, she continued to grow weaker until on the evening of March 16, 1927, surrounded by husband, five children, her parents and only brother, she passed peacefully away, conscious almost to the last and trusting in her Saviour for the future.

The deceased was a quiet, but cheerful and kindly disposition, essentially a home maker, a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a kind neighbour. In her early years she was a consistent member until her death. Before her marriage she was also a faithful member of Cedarville choir, and was always ready to do her part in all Christian work. She leaves to mourn her loss, besides her husband, a family of five children, Lorne F., Edna; William J., Neil and Margaret, the eldest 16 and the youngest 2 years. One daughter predeceased her eleven years ago at the age of eleven months. Her parents and one brother, W. J. Wilkie of Cedarville, also survive.

The funeral which was held on March 18th was conducted in her late homeand also at the grave by Rev. W. A. Westcott of Conn United Church, and was very largely attended. The remains were interred in the Mount Forest Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs. George Keith, Gilbert Keith, Wesley Funston, Nelson Boyd, Thomas Yake and John McEachern.

“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth–that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them.” Mount Forest Confederate, Mar. 31, 1927.

William J. Funston

March 15, 1856 ~ April 6, 1927

The community round about Conn was surprised indeed when, on April 6, 1927, word went abroad that Mr. Wm. James Funston had died that morning. Apparently enjoying good health up to within a few days of his death, he had contracted pneumonia, and, although everything was done that could have been done to battle the disease, he gradually grew weaker and passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning.

The late Mr. Funston was born in the Township of Dummer, Peterboro County, in 1856, being the son of James Funston, and of Mary Lowry, his wife. When but a year old his parents moved to Grey Co., and settled on Lot 3, Con. 3, Township of Proton, and it continued to be his home until he retired from farming in 1918, and moved to Conn.

In the year 1877, William James Funston was married to Barbara Giles of the 16th Concession of the Township of Maryboro, Wellington Co., and to them in the course of years were born three sons, William J., Jr., Saskatoon; Rufus, Lot 3, Con. 4; Township of Proton; and Wallace, on the old homestead.

The funeral was held on Friday, April 8, 1927, and was conducted by Rev. W. A. Westcott, Conn, his minister.  In spite of bad road conditions the attendance was very large, which indicates the esteem in which the late Mr. Funston was held.  Messrs. McFadyen, Jackson, Brown, Bishop, and McQueen, of Conn, and Mr. John Wilkie, Cedarville, were the pall bearers.  Interment took place in the Mount Forest Cemetery.

Besides his widow and three sons, he leaves to mourn his loss three sisters, Mrs. Samuel McLuhan, Mount Forest; Mrs. Lawrence Cook, Craik, Sask.; and Miss Mary Funston, Toronto; and three brothers, George, Toronto; Wesley, on Lot 4, Con. 3, Proton; and Fred, in the West.  Mrs. Funston and family have the sincerest sympathy of this community. Mount Forest Confederate, Apr. 21, 1927.

Barbara Giles Funston

September 1, 1856 ~ December 1, 1934

On Saturday evening, December 1, 1934, there passed away at the home of her son, Mr. Rufus Funston, Proton, Barbara Giles, relict of the late William James Funston, aged 77 years.

Deceased was an aged and much esteemed resident of Proton. She came from the 16th of Maryborough, and was married in 1877. On frequent visits to the late Mr. and Mrs. James Giles she made many friends here, who regret to hear of her passing. She has not enjoyed good health for some months. Her husband predeceased her in 1927. She is survived by three sons: William W. of Waseca, Sask., Rufus, Lot 3, Con. 4, Proton, and Wallace on the homestead, Lot 3, Con. 3, Proton.

The funeral took place on Monday afternoon to the Mount Forest Cemetery and was largely attended. The Rev. J. D. Wildfong conducted the services. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Nelson and Arthur Boyd, Donald McQueen, Wesley Funston, Robert Jackson and James H. Leversage. Mount Forest Confederate, Dec. 6, 1934.

James Funston

October 5, 1819 ~ September 11, 1908

The death of Mr. James Funston on September 11, 1908, removed one of Proton’s oldest and most respected pioneers. He was in his 89th year and was born in Donegal, Ireland. In 1852 he, with his wife and family, came to the township of Asphodel, in the county of Peterborough, where he resided for about six years. In 1858 he moved to Lot 3, Con. 3, Proton, his home being the Place of Worship for quite a number of years for the Methodists, until they built a church at Conn. In 1875 his wife died leaving him and seven children. In 1877 he bought Lot 4, Con. 3, Proton, where he resided until his death. About six months ago he took cold and since then he has been gradually growing weaker until he quietly breathed his last. In 1879 he was again married and is survived by his widow and four children of this marriage. Deceased was a Conservative and a member of the Methodist Church. His pastor, Rev. Mr. Cooper, conducted the funeral to the Mount Forest Cemetery, the pall-bearers being Messrs. Robert Brown, William Brown, Ed. Patterson, William Boyd, D. Pride and James McEachern. The respected family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. Mount Forest Representative, Oct. 1, 1908.
