Alexander Rae
June 27, 1862 ~ December 18, 1950
Another one of our older residents passed away on December 18, 1950, in the person of Alexander Rae, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Phil Ghent, in Arthur Township.
The deceased was born in June, 1862, near Strathroy, one of six children, born to the late Matthew and Elsbeth Rae who came out to Canada from Scotland. When about five years of age he moved with his parents to Concession 8, Egremont Township, where his father bought a farm. Here they lived in a log cabin built by his father, for several years.
Sixty years ago he married Mary Quinn. They lived on the farm adjoining his father's farm and now owned by his son Cecil. There they replaced the former log buildings with the present frame barn and brick house. Later, they bought another farm on the 8th Concession, now owned by the youngest son, Bert.
In 1928 they moved to Mount Forest where he has spent the past 22 years. His wife predeceased him in 1942.
He leaves to mourn his loss four sons, Wesley, Edward, Cecil and Bert, and six daughters, Jennie (Mrs. Charles Gilstorf) of Craik, Sask., Minnie (Mrs. H. A. Ross), Ella (Mrs. Everitt Hunt), Myrtle (Mrs. Phil Ghent), Ruby (Mrs. Wilfred Ryan) and Eileen (Mrs. Wm. Snyder) of Toronto. The eldest son, William Henry, died in infancy. One brother, William of Mount Forest also survives. There are 34 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral which was largely attended was held from the Pentecostal Church, Mt. Forest, on Wednesday, December 20. His pastor, Rev. G. Lucas conducted the service. Interment was made in Woodland Cemetery, the pallbearers being his five sons-in-law, and eldest grandson, Murray Rae. The flower bearers were grandsons, Verdon Rae, Delton Rae and Floyd Rae. Mount Forest Confederate, Dec. 28, 1950.
Mary Quinn Rae
May 1, 1866 ~ February 11, 1942
Once more we are called upon to record the passing of one of our fast-thinning ranks of old residents of Woodland and Mount Forest in the person of Mary Quinn, wife of Alex Rae, who after an illness of but a few days passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday evening, February 11, 1942, with but few knowing that her illness was so serious.
Mary Quinn was the eldest of nine children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Quinn, and was born 75 years ago in Egremont Township. On October 16, 1889, she married Alex Rae, eldest son of the late Mathew Rae, settling on the farm east of Woodland where their son Cecil now lives. Several years ago they retired to Mount Forest, and in 1939 they celebrated their golden wedding. Mrs. Rae gave thanks for being spared to see her family of ten children married in comfortable homes. She had no favourites and always felt that hard work and wholesome food was the best recipe for good health, which the whole family enjoy.
Left to mourn her loss are her husband, Alex Rae, and ten children, Wesley, Cecil and Bert of Egremont Township; Ed. in Mount Forest; Jennie, Mrs. Chas. Gilstorf, Craik, Sask., who was the only member of the family not present; Minnie, Mrs. Hazel Ross; Myrtle, Mrs. Phil Ghent; Ella, Mrs. Everett Hunt; Ruby, Mrs. Wilfred Ryan, all of Mount Forest, and Ilene, Mrs. Wm. Snyder, Toronto. There are also four brothers and four sisters, Mrs. John Sharpe and Mrs. Will Hattle, Guelph; Mrs. Leonard Hattle, Mrs. Dan McPhee, Isaac and Thomas, of Saskatchewan, and Wm. A. Quinn, Mount Forest. There are also 29 grandchildren.
The funeral service was held on Saturday from the Pentecostal church of which Mrs. Rae was a devoted member, and was largely attended by friends and relatives, and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. D. Emmons, who spoke highly of her Christian life, using for his text her favourite words in prayer. There is a Heaven to gain and a Hell to shun. She was always ready to give testimony in any service, of her faith in prayer, her faith in God. Her daily ministry to the needy will be cherished as a living monument to all who knew her. A hymn, Wonderful Morning, was sung in fine voice by Mrs. Emmons.
The many bouquets, wreaths and pillow sent in loving memory were carried by Floyd Rae, Verdun Rae, Percy Rae, Charlie Hattle, Harold Hattle and Morris Cockerill.
The pall bearers were her five sons-in-law and one grandson, Everett Hunt, Phil Ghent, Hazel Ross, Wilfred Ryan, Wm. Snyder and Murray Rae of the R.C.A.F.
Interment was made in Woodland Cemetery.
Those attending from a distance were: Mrs. Peter Hodgson, Owen Sound, a sister of Mr. Rae, Mr. and Mrs. Will hattle and Mrs. John Sharpe, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hattle and Harold Hattle, Guelph. Mount Forest Confederate, Feb. 19, 1942.
