5.9.4.5. Fifth child of Margaret E. Johnston and Alfred E. Switzer, Russell Switzer, was born February 4, 1911, in Midland, Simcoe Co., Ontario.

He married Margaret Annie Evans, daughter of Arthur Evans and Ellen Ada “Nellie” Thompson, on November 4, 1929, Midland, Ontario, and had one child:

Russell Switzer

Funeral services were held for Russell Switzer on May 10, 1989 at the Nicholls Funeral Home, Midland. Reverend David Phillips was the officiating clergy. Cremation to follow.

Mr. Switzer died on May 7, 1989 in his 79th year at the Huronia District Hospital.

Born in Midland, he was the son of Alfred and Margaret Switzer.

He married Margaret A. Evans in 1929 and thereafter lived in Midland.

Retired for 12 years, Mr. Switzer had previously sailed the Great Lakes and worked at the Midland Ship Yard. He had been an operator with the Midland Public Utilities Commission for 33 years, from 1944 to 1977.

Mr. Russell Switzer is survived by his wife Mrs. Margaret A. Switzer as well as his daughter June (Mrs. John Evans) of Pickering.

Mr. Switzer is also survived by his sisters, Elvera, Phoebe, Margaret and Doris all of Hamilton as well as three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents Alfred and Margaret Switzer as well as his brothers Milford, Raymond, Sam and Bob. Midland Free Press, May 10, 1989.

Margaret A. Evans Switzer

December 14, 1912 ~ September 26, 1999

Peacefully at the Villa Care Centre, Midland on Sunday, September 26, 1999, in her 87th year. Margaret Annie Switzer (nee Evans) of Midland, beloved wife of the late Russell Switzer. Dear mother of June and her husband John Evans of Midland. Loving grandmother of Mrs. Lynn Cane, Mrs. Kim McDowell and Stephen Ross. Great grandmother of Jennifer, Lyndsey and Russell Cane, Shane and Nicole McDowell. Also remembered by a cousin Charles Noquet of Midland. Funeral services were held at the Nicholls Funeral Home, 330 Midland Ave., Midland on Wednesday, September 29, 1999. Cremation following. Memorial donations to the Alzheimers Society would be appreciated. Midland Free Press, Oct. 1, 1999.

Arthur Evans

September 28, 1884 ~ March 23, 1942

The funeral of the late Arthur Evans who was for many years a resident of Midland took place on Wednesday, March 25, 1942, at 2:30 p.m. A short service was held at his late residence, 2 Donalda St. conducted by the Rev. A. E. Winnington Ingram. Interment took place in Lakeview Cemetery.

The late Mr. Evans, who was 58 years of age, was employed with the Midland Shipbuilding Company, Ltd. where since the yards opened during this war he had been joiner foreman. He was born in London, England, in 1884, and came to Midland in 1909.

His wife was formerly Ellen Thompson of London, England who survives him as well as two daughters, Mrs. Harry Unrath of New York City and Mrs. Russell Switzer of Midland. There is one grandchild June Switzer, of Midland.

Pallbearers were Sam Bell, Allan Dane, John Oakley, Mr. Churcher, Bruce Kettle, and William Baker all of Midland.

Among the out-of-town friends attending the service were: Mrs. M. Beal, Mr. Robert Beal, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Denman, Mr. Ray Switzer of Toronto; Mrs. B. McAvoy, Lindsay; Mr. Ken Johnston, Pickering; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sinclair and Mrs. R. F. Sinclair of Collingwood.

Floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. He was respected and well liked by his fellow workers and many friends in and around Midland. Midland Free Press, Apr. 1, 1942.

Ellen A. Thompson Evans

January 7, 1888 ~ April 12, 1962

A resident of Midland for over 50 years, Mrs. Ellen A. Evans died April 12, 1962 in St. Andrews Hospital, Midland, following a short illness. She was 74.

Funeral service was held at Nicholls Funeral Home April 14 with Rev. Ralph Wright officiating. Temporary entombment was in Lakeview Cemetery vault.

Pallbearers were Sam Switzer, Ray Switzer, Fred Bools, John Gowette, Bruce Kettle and Jim McCullagh.

Born in London, England, in 1888, she married Arthur Evans in 1907 and moved to Midland in 1910. Mr. Evans predeceased her in 1942.

Surviving are one daughter, Margaret (Mrs. Russell Switzer), Midland; grand-daughter, Mrs. Arthur Ross, Pickering, and three great-grandchildren, also of Pickering. A daughter, Ivy, predeceased her in January of this year.

Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the service came from Burlington, St. Catharines, Toronto, Minden, Alliston and Pickering. Midland Free Press Herald, Apr. 25, 1962.
