5.9.4.6. Sixth child of Margaret E. Johnston and Alfred E. Switzer, Ray Switzer, was born June 20, 1912, in Peterborough, Ontario.

He married Gladys Agnes Cecilia Hurley, daughter of John Joseph Hurley and Mary Elizabeth Warne, April 14, 1933, Penetanguishene, Simcoe Co., Ontario, and had three children:

Ray Switzer died January 26, 1985, aged 72 years in Midland, Ontario and Gladys A. Hurley Switzer died December 4, 2004, aged 92 years in Scarborough, Ontario and are interred at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Penetanguishene, Ontario.

Peacefully at home on Saturday, January 26, 1985. Ray Switzer beloved husband of Gladys Hurley, dear father of Mary (Mrs. John McCarthy), Ray (Ottawa) and Frank. Loving grandfather of Gerry, Todd and John McCarthy, Michael and Sarah Switzer. Also survived by four sisters and two brothers. Resting at the Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. East (east of Pharmacy). Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in Precious Blood Church (Lawrence near Victoria Park). Peacefully at Scarborough General Hospital on Saturday, December 4, 2004. Gladys Switzer, beloved wife of the late Ray and loving mother of Mary and her husband the late John McCarthy, Ray and his wife Pat, Frank and his wife Gwen. Dear grandma of Gerry (Sheila), Todd (Kathy), John (Joan), Michael, Sarah, Jane and Cameron. Great-grandma of Conor, Meaghan, Brendan, Jake, Jeanelle and John C. Dear daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Hurley. Loving sister of the late Marguerite (Sister Bernarda, CSJ), Joseph (Brother Thaddeus FSC) and John (Brother Aquinas FSC). Lovingly remembered by extended family and friends. Resting at the Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. East (between Warden and Pharmacy) from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. in Annunciation Church (Victoria Park south of Ellesmere). Spring Interment St. Ann’s Cemetery, Penetang-uishene, Ontario. John J. Hurley

November 23, 1860 ~ November 10, 1934

Penetanguishene, Nov. 13—Mr. John Joseph Hurley, lifelong resident of Penetang and the builder of most of the altars in the Roman Catholic Churches at Penetang, Midland and Waubaushene, died on Saturday, November 10, 1934 after a month’s illness and is being buried this morning. He was born at Penetang nearly 74 years ago, and in 1901 was married to Miss Elizabeth Warne of Toronto, who survives him, with two sons, Brothers Thaddeus and Aquinas of De la Salle College, Aurora, and two daughters, Mrs. Ray Switzer of Penetang and Sister M. Bernarda of St. Joseph’s Convent, Toronto.

The funeral left his late residence for the Jesuit Memorial Church at 9 o’clock, where Requiem High Mass was sung before interment was made in the Roman Catholic Cemetery here. Pallbearers were Messrs. Charles Hurley, Edgar Moreau, S. R. Gendron, Alfred Deroches, Thomas Landre and Capt. William Madden.

The late Mr. Hurley was a devout Catholic, being a member of the Jesuit Memorial Church and of the Holy Name Society. Midland Free Press, Nov. 13, 1934.

At Providence Villa on Sunday, December 1, 1968, in her 92nd year, Elizabeth Mary Warne, wife of the late John J. Hurley (Penetanguishene, Ont.), dear mother of Sister M. Bernarda, C.S.J., (Marguerite), Brother Thaddeus F.S.C., (Angelo), Gladys (Mrs. Ray Switzer) and Brother Aquinas F.S.C. (John), loving grandmother of Mary, (Mrs. John McCarthy), Ray and Frank Switzer, great-grandmother of Gerrard, Todd and John McCarthy. Resting at the Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. E. (east of Pharmacy). Funeral Mass on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Precious Blood Church (Lawrence Ave. E. at Victoria Park). Interment St. Anne’s Cemetery, Penetanguishene on arrival of motors.
