----- OBITUARIES -----

Zacharias Motten

Zacharias Motten, father of Prof. Roger H. Motten of Colorado college, died Saturday morning, October 16, 1915 in Toledo, Ohio, where he was visiting with his son, Charles Motten.

Professor Motten was on his way east, where he had been called Friday on account of the serious illness of his father, but he had only reached Lincoln, Nebraska, when word of the death came. The elder Mr. Motten had left Colorado Springs for the east, three weeks ago in an attempt to benefit his health.

Zacharias Motten was 73 years old and had lived in Colorado Springs with Professor and Mrs. Motten for the last five years. He is survived by his widow Emily Jane, who also lives here, and his two sons, Roger and Charles.

Professor Motten and his mother will arrive in Colorado Springs with the body today and the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock, from Grace Church. Internment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs Gazette, Oct. 18, 1915.

Emily J. Henwood Motten

September 17, 1843 ~ March 3, 1927

Erie friends of Mrs. Emily J. Motten were surprised and shocked to learn of her death, which occurred sometime during Wednesday night, March 3, 1927 at Rye, N.Y., where for several years she had made her home with her son, Roger H. Motten, who holds a responsible position with the Woodcraft company at Rye.

Mrs. Motten was in the 84th year of her age. For many years she was a resident of Erie, where her husband, the late Z. Motten, conducted a grocery business in company with the late Adam Minnig.

Mrs. Motten had retired in her usual health on Wednesday evening and, according to the reports which reached Erie, was found dead in her bed on Thursday morning.

No word had at this writing reached Erie concerning funeral arrangements, but it is expected that the ceremonies will be held at Rye, the intention being when conditionss permit, to transport her remains to Colorado Springs, Colo., for final interment beside her late husband, who preceded her in death several years ago.

Surviving the deceased are two sons, Charles, the elder, and Roger, of Rye, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Clara) Spencer, of West Ninth street; Mrs. Rose Spooner of West Seventh street, and Mrs. Anna Pratt, of Toronto, Canada.

Mrs. Motten was well and favorably known to many of the older residents of Erie, who will regret to learn of her death. Erie Dispatch Herald, Mar. 4, 1927.
