6.1.2. Second child of Zacharias Motten and Emily Jane Henwood, Roger Henwood Motten, was born August 31, 1879, in Erie, Pennsylvania, U.S.
He married Jessie Caroline Barclay, daughter of Franklin Barclay and Susan Thompson, August 14, 1913, in Yonkers, New York and had three children:

Roger H. Motten died February 7, 1951, aged 71 years in Wethersfield, Connecticut and Jessie C. Barclay Motten died September 30, 1967, aged 82 years in Princeton, New Jersey and are interred at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut.

News of great interest in college circles will become public today with the departure for the east of Professor Roger H. Motten, one of the younger instructors at Colorago college, who has confessed that he is going on a very important mission to claim as his bride Miss Jessie Caroline Barclay of Yonkers, N.Y. The wedding will take place in Yonkers next Thursday, August 14, 1913. After a wedding tour Professor Motten will bring his bride here to make their home at 7 Pelham Place.
Miss Barclay, after her graduation from Smith, became private secretary to Miss Ruth Loomis, dean of women at Colorado college, and in the four years of her residence here has become one the of most popular members of the college set. Professor Motten, having been a member of the faculty for four years, received his full professorship last June. He is a graduate of Allegheny college in Pennsylvania, and is a member of Phi Delta Theta, a chapter of which fraternity he was instrumental in having installed at Colorado college last spring. Professor Motten is also an honorary member of Pearsons society, has acted as coach and critic of the annual Pearsons plays, and is actively identified with all the social and athletic interests of the college. Dr. Motten Dies At 71 In Wethersfield
Was Former Dean of Hillyer, Former Trinity College Treasurer
Dr. Roger Henwood Motten, 71 dean emeritus of Hilyer College and former treasurer of Trinity College, died suddenly Wednesday morning, February 7, 1951 at his home, 30 Center Street, Wethersfield.
At the time of his death, Dr. Motten was chairman of the department of English at the Hartford Branch of the University of Connecticut, and had recently been elected to his third term as president of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.
He was born in Erie, Pa, August 31, 1879, the son of the late Zacharias Motten and Emily Jane Henwood Motten, and was graduated from Alleghany College in 1901. He received a master’s degree there in 1915, and after postgraduate work at the University of Denver, received his doctorate from Colorado College in 1920.
Dr. Motten taught at several schools and colleges in Colorado and was executive secretary of the Woodcraft League of America, prior to coming to Connecticut in 1929 to become treasurer of Trinity. He held that position until 1937. From 1939 until 1942, Dr. Motten was manager of the Hartford of[f]ice of the John Hancock Insurance Company. He was dean and head of the English department of Hilyer College from 1942 until 1945.
He was a trustee of the Forman School in Litchfield, a member of the executive council of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, and had been a member of the Wethersfield Board of Education from 1934 until his death. He was at one time governor of the Twenty-first District of the International Association of Rotary Clubs; and held memberships in many Greek letter societies and educational associations. He was the author of “The Vale of Poetry in Schools” and had dramatized various works by standard authors.
Dr. Motten leaves his wife, Mrs. Jessie Barclay Motten, whom he married in 1913; a daughter, Mrs. M. Morton Lassen of Bolton; two sons, Roger H. Motten, Jr., of Noroton Heights and Clement G. Motten of Philadelphia, Pa., and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. Hartford Courant, Feb. 8, 1951.
Jessie C. Barclay Motten
October 3, 1884 ~ September 30, 1967
Mrs. Jessie B. Motten, 82, of Center St., Wethersfield, died at 10 Acre Rest Home, Princeton, N.J., Saturday, September 30, 1967. The widow of Roger H. Motten, she was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had resided in Wethersfield for many years. She was a member of the Second Church of Christ Scientist, Hartford and had been a Christian Practitioner for many years. She leaves two sons, Roger H. Motten of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Clement Motten of Lansdowne, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. M. Morton Lassen of Palm Dale, Calif., and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the James T. Pratt Funeral Home, 71 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. There will be no calling hours prior to the service.
