----- OBITUARIES -----

Mary Ann Adams Gummow

On Wednesday evening of last week, November 11, 1936, the sad news of the passing of Mrs. Robert Gummow at the home of her son, Albert Gummow, Lot 4, Conc. 9, Logan Twp., was heard with sincere regret. She was in her 78th year and had been in failing health since July. Death was attributed to heart failure. The late Mary Ann Adams was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Adams and was born in Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ont. Upon their marriage in 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Gummow took up residence in Logan Twp. on the same farm where the death occurred. During her long residence in this community, she had won the respect and esteem of many friends and was a faithful member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Mitchell. The late Mrs. Gummow’s grandparents were born in Ireland, coming from that country to settle near Baltimore, Ontario. When Thomas Adams, her father, married Jane James, they moved near Fenella, where Mrs. Gummow was born and where all their family settled and still reside with the exception of Mrs. Gummow who came to Logan.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband and one son, Albert Gummow, also four sisters, Mrs. Robert Waldie, Grafton, Mrs. William Macklin, Mrs. Vernon Brenton, and Mrs. George Tucker of Fenella, and one brother Samuel Adams also of Fenella. Saturday morning the remains were conveyed to Fenella for service there and interment took place in Bethel (Macklin’s) Cemetery, Macklin’s Settlement, near that place. Rev. W. R. Scott of Bethany United Church, Roseneath Circuit, had charge to the service. Pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Thomas Waldie, Elvin Tucker, Harold Spear, Delbert Adams, Bruce Macklin, Leslie Sherwin. This was the church first attended by the Gummow’s. Mitchell Advocate, Nov. 19, 1936.

The death occurred on Wednesday evening, September 21, 1938, of Robert Gummow, of Willow Grove, at the home of his son, Albert Gummow, Logan, after a period of ill health commencing last June and terminating in almost three weeks confinement to his room. He was in his 85th year. Born in Haldimand Township, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gummow. In 1883 he married Mary Ann Adams moving at that time to the farm now occupied by his son, Lot 4, Conc. 9, Logan Township. They also resided in Fullarton Twp. and Mitchell for a few years after which they moved to the farm at Willow Grove, being taken to his son’s home from there, when he became ill. His wife passed away November 11, 1936. He was a member of Knox Pres. Church, Mitchell. His son, Albert, and 3 sisters survive. They are Mrs. T. P. Wood, Logan; Mrs. Thos. Hicks, and Mrs. Matthew Elliott, Mitchell. A brother, John, died several years ago.

The funeral service at the home of his son Saturday afternoon was conducted by Rev. A. Raeburn Gibson.
