Verna Christina Brown (1919 ~ 2013)
9.2.3.2. Second child of Ethel Isabella Waldie and Oria A. Brown, Verna Christina Brown, was born October 14, 1919, in Fenella, Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.
She married Melville Howard Macklin, son of Howard Edward Macklin and Velma Melita Wragg, June 10, 1939, in Academy Hill, Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario and had three children:

Verna C. Brown Macklin died February 5, 2013, aged 93 years in Port Hope, Ontario and Melville H. Macklin died December 13, 2006, aged 89 years in Roseneath, Ontario and are interred at Macklin’s Cemetery.

A very pretty spring wedding was solemnized at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 1939 when Verna Christina Brown, daughter of Mrs. Ethel Brown, of Grafton, became the bride of Melville Howard Macklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard E. Macklin, of Fenella. Rev. Dr. Smith, of Grafton, officiated at the ceremony, which was held at the home of the bride’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Waldie.
The bride entered the room on the arm of her uncle, Mr. Thomas Waldie, of Grafton, to the strains of Lohengrin’s Wedding March, played by Miss Doris Budd, of Port Hope. The bride was becomingly gowned in white triple sheer with a dress length veil adorned with bridal wreath and carried a bouquet of Roses, carnations andbridal wreath.
She was attended by Miss Mary Grant, of Port Hope, cousin of the groom, who wore blue turquoise crepe and carried a bouquet of roses, carnations and spirea. Mr. Floyd Brown, of Grafton, brother of the bride, was groomsman. During the signing of the register, Miss Budd played “I Love You Truly” as a piano solo.
Following the ceremony the bride’s mother received wearing a gown of navy sheer. The groom’s mother was gowned in rose and white figured sheer. The bride’s table was decorated in pink and white, while the room was ornate with spirea, evergreens and iris.
Later the happy couple left amid a shower of best wishes and congratulations for a trip to Niagara Falls and western points. On their return they will take up residence on the Macklin homestead.
Among the guests at the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Orme Beatty, Miss Mary Grant, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Budd, Doris, Donald and Gwen, of Port Hope; Mrs. John Macklin, Iolene and Kathleen, of Hamilton; the groom’s grandmother, Mrs. George Wragg, and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Roberts, of Port Hope; Mr. Fred Brown and Earl, of Warkworth, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Greenly, of Norham; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown, Gene, Orene and Nelda, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Sherwin, Leah and Neil; the groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Macklin and Mr. Norman Freeman, all of Roseneath; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Adams, of Fenella, and the bride’s aunt, Miss Christina Waldie.
The groom’s gifts to the bridesmaid and pianist were white gold necklaces, and to the groomsman a gold collar holder and tie slide. Cobourg Sentinel-Star, June 15, 1939.

Verna Christine Macklin (nee Brown) peacefully passed away at Regency Manor Nursing Home, Port Hope on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Predeceased by husband Melville Macklin. Loving mother of Ronald Macklin (Emily), Marie Bing and Trevor Macklin (Bonnie). Sadly missed by her 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Predeceased by parents Orville & Ethel Brown and brother Floyd Brown. Melville Howard Macklin, at his residence, George Road, RR#4, Roseneath, on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, age 89 years. Melville Macklin, son of the late Howard Edward Macklin and the late Velma (Wragg). Loving husband of Verna (Brown) for 67 years. Dear father of Ronald Macklin and his wife Emily of Roseneath, Marie and her husband Hubert Bing of Cobourg, and Trevor Macklin and his wife Bonnie of Roseneath. Predeceased by his sister Florence Roberts. Sadly missed by his eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Walas Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Warkworth on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, December 16th at 1 p.m. The Reverend Jamie York officiating.
