Sarah Jane Adams  (1863 ~ 1934)

 

9.4. Fourth child of Thomas Adams and Jane James, Sarah Jane Adams, was born December 21, 1863, in Fenella, Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.

  She married Charles Alfred Sherwin, son of Joseph Sherwin and Grace White, April 3, 1885 in Alnwick Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario and had four children:

 

 

  Sarah J. Adams Sherwin died January 21, 1934, aged 70 years and Charles A. Sherwin died November 2, 1939, aged 78 years in Roseneath, Ontario, and are interred at Centenary Cemetery.

Sarah J. Adams Sherwin

The death occurred on Sunday night, January 21, 1934, of Mrs. Charles Sherwin, after an illness extending over a period of years.  Mrs. Sherwin, formerly Sarah Jane Adams, was the daughter of pioneer parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Adams of Fenella.    On April 3, 1885, she was united in marriage to Charles Sherwin, they taking up residence on the Sherwin homestead in Alnwick Township, near Centenary Church, where they lived until about 21 years ago, when they moved to Roseneath. Besides her sorrowing husband, she leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Delbert and Silas, living near Centenary, Leslie of Roseneath, and one daughter, Mrs. Edgar Braithwaite, Roseneath; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Robert Gummow of Mitchell, Mrs. Robert Waldie of Grafton, Mrs. George Tucker of Centreton, Mrs. W. A. Macklin and Mrs. Vernon Brenton of Fenella, and one brother, Samuel Adams, also of Fenella. One brother, Thomas Adams, and one sister, Mrs. J. Spear predeceased her some years ago. During her young womanhood, Mrs. Sherwin was a member of Fenella Methodist Church, where for several years she officiated as organist. Following her marriage, she attended and joined the Presbyterian Church.

  Mrs. Sherwin was born on December 29, 1863, and on attaining her 70th birthday, during the past Christmastide, a family gathering was held in her honor. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the family residence, conducted by Rev. R. W. Paton, with interment at Centenary Cemetery. Cobourg Sentinel-Star, Jan. 25, 1934.

 

Charles A. Sherwin

March 19, 1861 ~ November 2, 1939

The death occurred very suddenly on November 2, 1939 at his residence, Roseneath of Charles Alfred Sherwin.

  Mr. Sherwin was in his 79th year and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sherwin, pioneer English settlers of Alnwick Township. He was a prominent agriculturist, and one of the township’s most esteemed residents. He was a member of the former Presbyterian Church, and following union was a member of the United Church. In politics he was a Liberal.

 Surviving are three sons, Delbert, Silas and Leslie, and one daughter, Mrs. Edgar Braithwaite, all of Alnwick Township. A brother, Allan, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Timlin, of Frobisher, Saskatchewan, and a sister, Mrs. John Ferguson, of Warkworth, survive also. Mrs. Sherwin, formerly Sarah Jane Adams, died six years ago.

 Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the family residence and Centenary Cemetery and were conducted by Rev. E. Beech.

  The pallbearers were E. T. Brisbin, A. Halstead, J. A. Nichol, Alfred Braithwaite, A. Mouncey and Andrew Brown. Cobourg Sentinel-Star, Nov. 9, 1939.
