----- MARRIAGE -----
Braithwaite—Scovell
St. James’ Church, Roseneath, was the scene of a very pretty wedding, December 18, 1954, when Helen Grace Louise Braithwaite, Roseneath, was married to Gordon Shelly Scovell, Wycliffe College, Toronto, son of Rev. and Mrs. Godfrey Scovell, Toronto.
The church was decorated with white and bronze chrysanthemums on spruce and balsam boughs.
The double ring ceremony was performed by the groom’s father, assisted by the rector, Rev. A. J. Patstone. Traditional wedding music was played by Miss Doreen Nichol who was accompanist for Mrs. Murray Manley, Peterborough, who sang.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose for her wedding a strapless gown of white nylon tulle and chantilly lace, with fitted chantilly lace jacket. Her embroidered fingertip veil of tulle illusion was held in place by a calot style headdress of tulle and pearls. She carried a semi-cascade bouquet of deep pink briarcliffe roses.
The bride’s attendants wore identical styled gowns of nylon net over taffeta with boleros and matching feathered headdresses. The colour chosen by the matron of honor, Mrs. William Burgess of Bowmanville was aqua marine; the bridesmaids, Miss Ina Conn, London, and Mrs. John Ferguson, Warkworth, chose shrimp and carried nosegays of contrasting chrysanthemums.
Norman Scovell, St. Chad’s College, Regina, was groomsman.
The ushers were Ken Sherwin, Roseneath, cousin of the bride, and George McFarlane, Toronto.
At the reception at Maple Lodge, Roseneath, the bride’s mother received wearing a gown of dusty rose crepe and chantilly lace with winter white hat. She was assisted by the grooms mother, wearing silver blue tricolene with matching hat. Both wore corsages of pink briarcliffe roses. At the luncheon for eighty guests the bride’s table was centred with a decorated three tier wedding cake, flanked by silver candelabra. The waitresses were Miss Pauline Down, Mrs. W. M. Reid, Mrs. R. Faith, Mrs. Robert Bigelow, and Miss Dorothy Sills.
For a honeymoon trip to eastern points the bride donned a pastel blue wool suit with winter white hat, black accessories and a muskrat fur coat.
They will reside in Toronto, prior to leaving in the ealt summer for Castor, Alberta where the groom will be rector. Guests were present from Blenheim, London, Toronto, Peterborough, Bowmanville, Port Hope, Warkworth, Fenella and Roseneath. Cobourg Sentinel-Star, Dec. 30, 1954.
