Abraham Ablan Astephen  (1881 ~ 1974)

 

A son of Stephen Ablan Astephen and Barbara Maria Khattar, Abraham Ablan Astephen, was born October 10, 1881, in Batroun, Lebanon.

  He married Rose Balah, daughter of Habib Balah and Helen Rahey, October 22, 1901, in North Sydney, Nova Scotia and had eight children:

 Abraham A. Astephen died February 4, 1974, aged 92 years and Rose Balah Astephen died September 17, 1971 aged 87 years in North Sydney, Nova Scotia and are interred at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Abraham A. Astephen

October 10, 1881 ~ February 4, 1974

NORTH SYDNEY—Abraham Astephen Sr., 93, of 32 Court Street, a retired local businessman, died Monday morning at home. He had been in ill health the past several weeks. 

  Born in Lebanon, Mr. Astephen was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Astephen. He became a naturalized citizen in 1896, residing in North Sydney most of his life.

 Mr. Astephen retired 25 years ago after operating or being involved in a variety of businesses over the years. He operated Astephen’s Service Station on Blowers Street in 1930, coal mines, a pool room and later bowling alleys.

 He was a member of the Cedars of Lebanon and was pre-deceased by his wife Rose in September 1971.

  A member of St. Joseph’s Parish, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Mary MacDonald, North Sydney; (Adela) Mrs. Gaston Barrette, Montreal; (Josie) Mrs. John H. Meers, North Sydney; (Marguerite) (Mrs. C. S. Hilcox), Tavistock, Ont.; (Rose) Mrs. Jack Zukowski, Ottawa; three sons, Coun. Stephen, Joe and Abraham, Jr., all of North Sydney; 31 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

  The body is resting at the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home, Blowers St., from where the funeral will take place Thursday with Requiem Mass in St. Joseph’s Church at 2 p.m. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Cape Breton Post, Feb. 5, 1974. 

 

Rose Balah Astephen

September 24, 1884 ~ September 17, 1971

NORTH SYDNEY—A long-time resident of this community Mrs. Abraham Astephen, 87, of Court Street died early Friday morning at home. She had been ill for the past year.

  Mr. and Mrs. Astephen would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on October 22.

  Born in Lebanon, the deceased was a respected member of the community residing here about 80 years. Mrs. Astephen was predeceased by a sister, (May) Mrs. David Rahey and a brother David Ballah.

  A member of St. Joseph’s Parish, she is survived by five daughters (Mary) Mrs. John MacDonald, North Sydney; (Adele) Mrs. Gaston Barrette, Montreal; (Josephine) Mrs. John Meers, New Glasgow; (Marguerite) Mrs. Clare Hilcox, Tavistock, Ont., and (Rose) Mrs. Jack Zukowski, Ottawa; also by three sons Councillor Stephen Astephen, here; Joseph and Abraham Astephen, of North Sydney; 31 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and by one sister Miss Emma Balah, here.

  The body is resting at the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home from where the funeral will take place Monday in time for Mass of Requiem in St. Joseph’s Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Cape Breton Post, Sept. 18, 1971.

Maria Khattar Astephen Aya

1865 ~ December 7, 1956

NORTH SYDNEY—Many friends throughout the Northside district and elsewhere will learn of the death on Friday morning of Mrs. Maria Aya, one of this town’s oldest residents.

  The deceased passed away in her sleep at the home of her son, Abraham Astephen, Sr., Court St. 

  Born in Lebanon 92 years ago, she came to Canada in 1894 and had resided at Sydney Mines until a few months ago when she came here to reside at the home of her son.

  The deceased was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Church.

 She was twice married, and is survived by one son Abraham Astephen, Sr., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  The remains are resting at the home of her son, from where the funeral will take place Sunday afternoon, December 9th, at 2:30 p.m. with services to be held at St. Joseph’s Church. Interment will be made in Holy Cross Cemetery, under the direction of the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home. Cape Breton Post, Dec. 8, 1956.
