John A. MacDonald
April 9, 1902 ~ July 21, 1960
NORTH SYDNEY—One of this town’s best most prominent businessmen, John A. MacDonald, passed away suddenly in Montreal on Thursday night and news of his passing was received here with deep regret.
His death came after a short illness at home followed by hospitalization in the Montreal Neurological Hospital.
Born in Sydney fifty-seven years ago, the late Mr. MacDonald received his early education at Sacred Heart School, after which he continued his studies at St. F. X. He later graduated from Dalhousie as a Registered Druggist.
He came to the Northside in 1935, and since then has been employed in Sydney Mines and North Sydney as a pharmacist. At the time of his passing, he was the owner of the New Medical Hall in this town.
The deceased was a devout member of St. Joseph’s church, and a faithful member of the Santa Maria Council of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Astephen, one son, Donald J. MacDonald, and two daughters, Anne Marie and Paula, all living at home.
He is also survived by three sisters. They are Mrs. (Dr.) L. R. Meech (Mary) of North Sydney; Mrs. Andrew Livingstone (Margaret) of Sydney; and Mrs. Gerald F. Murphy (Caroline) of Ottawa. One uncle, Hugh MacMillan of Baltimore, also survives.
The remains will arrive at the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home on Sun-day and will lie until the funeral arrangements for which will be announced later. Cape Breton Post, July 23, 1960.
