Stephen Astephen  (1919 ~ 1994)

 

4. Fourth child of Abraham A. Astephen and Rose Balah, Stephen Astephen, was born January 2, 1919, in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. 

  He married Mary Kirksby Bowes, daughter of Reginald Kirksby Bowes and Vera Howard, November 9, 1944, in Cuckfield, Sussex, England and had 12 children:

  Stephen Astephen died January 15, 1994, aged 75 years, and Mary K. Bowes Astephen died July 16, 2015, aged 93 years in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Stephen Astephen - 75, 97 Pierce St., North Sydney, died January 15, 1994, at home. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Abraham and Rose (Balah) Astephen. For a number of years, he owned and operated Astephen Irving, North Sydney; veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Army; member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19; honorary member of the Northern Yacht club; life member of the Kinsmen Club and K-40 Club, both in North Sydney and Sydney Harbour Ports Board of Directors. He was director of the North Sydney Business Improvement DIstrict Commission; former deputy mayor of North Sydney and served as a town councillor for 23 years. He received many awards for his work in community affairs including one from Sport Nova Scotia in recognition of his contribution to amateur sports. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Bowes; six sons, Francis, Mendon, Mass.; Peter, Halifax; Michael, Denis, Bernard, all of North Sydney; John, Sydney; five daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Larry Costello), Niagara on the Lake, Ont.; Barbara (Mrs. Jack MacLean), Shelburne; Clare (Mrs. Albert Bishop), North Sydney; Stephanie (Mrs. Stan MacDonald), Sydney; Paula, Halifax; four sisters, Mary MacDonald, North Sydney; Adele Barrette, Laval, Que.; Marguerite (Mrs. Clare Hilcox), Tavistock, Ont.; Rose Zukowski, Cornwall, Ont.; brother, Abraham, North Sydney; 32 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Paul; brother, Joseph; sister, Josephine. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in W. I. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia.
